Subject: G-Tube feeding: odor and flavor of formula makes my husband sick

My husband Joe is being treated for cancer of the tongue and neck and he has a g-tube for feeding and fluids.  He is now unable to take any food/fluid and meds by mouth -everything is in liquid form and taken via the feeding tube.   He has had a lot of problems tolerating and keeping down the canned food, largely due to the strong flavor and odor.  We have tried probalance vanilla, fibernutrion non-flavored, jetivity non-flavored and ensure.  Even the non-flavored are still very strong and have a strong smell and he ends up vomiting when he eats.

On Monday he ended up in the hospital because he was unable to keep food down for 3 days and unable to keep meds down for 2 days.  He is still in the hospital and they have tried different brands of canned food and also slowing the feeding down to where it takes approx 10 hrs to feed him one can of food.  He still is not keeping the food down and we think part of it is the strong odor of the canned food.

Has anyone experienced this and do you have suggestions for a different brand of canned food or a way to eliminate the strong odor?

I am sorry for the problems your husband is having. He needs all the calories he can get to fight the cancer. I can only tell you what my mother used. She is really sensitive to smells and the only drink she used was Equate Plus from Walmart. She didn't like Ensure. I hope your husband finds something he can tolerate. Keep us updated.
