Greetings ALL!

I have written a couple of times on this board about hiccups and dehydration and am so grateful for the responses.

My dad has stage III EC cancer with one tumor at the bottom of his esophagus and two lymph nodes effected.  He is currently on his radiation treatment (28 day treatment with only 12 days left)! and infusion chemo.  After treatment he will have surgery.  I am encouraged by the many survival stories on this site because as you all know -- this cancer is not a fun one and it is so painful watching your loved one battle day after day.  The good news is that he is able to eat now because the treatment has shrunk his tumor! He is also walking around the house without support because he is finally hydrated.

A couple questions:  Did anyone have problems with the hiccups as a result of taking the steriod given during chemo called "Dexi?"

And, the doctors say his tumor will start to feel like a sunburn because of the radiation.  Did this happen to anyone?

Does anyone know about a drug called procrit for hydrating patients?

Thanks,

PS.  Azzie, Pat and Lynn -- if you are reading this -- thank you for your wisdom and knowledge.  You are helping so many people get through this very difficult time.  Thank you.

Tracy

Hi Tracy:  Robbie had internal radiation (brachytherapy) and the first day that is was finished he ate very very well.  Then the burning started and he said that he felt like his insides were on fire.  He could not eat much at all for several weeks.  We made sure he had milk shakes and Ensure (Boost) Plus.  After the burning ceased he began to eat and put on weight.  My son is very fine boned and weighed only 135 pounds before he got ill. He then went down to 110 pounds after the radiation.  The primary tumour was completely destroyed with the brachy.  Robbie's problem has always been that the beast had spread to the liver before it was found.  Dr. Sur told us quite frankly about one week ago that he gave Robbie 4-6 months with treatment in early April 2006 but he frankly believed that Robbie would not live to see summer 2006 and here we are in the fall of 2007.  Robbie is very thin but up until he had the radio frequency ablation therapy he was looking healthy and had gained weight and eating almost everything.  I believe that the RFA therapy is much like the radiation and it burns.  Try to get your Dad to have things with lots of food value like ice cream, milk shakes, instant breakfasts with ensure or boost added, cream soups using cream instead of milk or water, Robbie could even eat poached fish.

It is very true that the radiation burns but if it does its job it is worth it.  Lots of hugs to you and I will keep you and your family in our prayers.

Love Lynn, Mom of Robbie
