In Shock Any Info Would Be Welcome

Hi Anyone,

I recently found out that my Aunt (dad's sister) 61 has cancer.  We don't know what type yet but it has spread throughout her body.  Apparently there is a large amount of thick fluid in her abdomen.  She is showing signs of dehydration.  Apparently she has been living with symptoms without letting anyone know..she dismissed them as this or that.  We don't know much right now yet everything we do find out seems worse than we thought.  It seems to me that she could go at anytime and I just cannot imagine our lives without her.  She lives two states away.  She has two boys in their mid to late 20's.  From what I can tell it seems like her cancer is along the Ovarian, Peritoneal, Gynecological realm.  Although there are  many other areas impacted.  I would appreciate any response from anyone.

I am so sorry to hear about this. I know how hard it is to find out about a loved one with cancer. Unfotunately all we can do is hope and pray to God that he will give us some more time with them and the strength to get through it. Just know that you have lots of support here :). My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer almost 3 years ago. I am very thankful that God has blessed us with more time with him then we expected. Sadly doctor's don't know everything there is to know about all the cancer that is out there so it does take time. I hope and pray that this finds you in a more comfortable state now.

Hello Jazzysmom~~ Hearing the diagnosis of Cancer is a very frightening time, and most of us immeditely jump to the conclusion that there is not much time left.  This can sometimes be the case, but I prefer to think of the quote "Cancer is a word, not a sentance'.  For most of us, coming to grips with the fact that this is really what we have is the hardest part of hearing the diagnosis.  Then facing the future and having to decide how we are going to deal with it comes next.  Your aunt is very fortunate that you have found this site, for you will be able to research her condition for her and assist her with advocacy as she starts her cancer journey.  Knowing something about the cancer type, the drugs most commonly used to treat it - as well as the side effects of these same drugs - , whether surgery or transplants can help.....the list goes on and on.  However going into this situation with knowledge is the best postition to be in.  Making informed choices and being able to really 'talk' with your oncologist helps the patient to feel that they are dealing from a position of strength.  If you can support her by attending doctors visits with her she will really be blessed, for as a patient I have found that I only 'take in' about a quarter of what the doctor says each visit.  Having my carer (in my case my husband) with me for each visit makes a huge difference.  I hope that you will be able to assist your aunt as she begins this cancer journey.  Hopefully you will be that special person who will help her with information, understanding and most of all love!!  Best wishes to you both, Cath
