Recently, I learned that my father was diagnosed with primary liver cancer.  Although I just found out, he was first diagnosed in early June 2007.  At that time, he had 3 tumors--the largest of which was 3 cm.  In August, a new test determined that the tumor had grown from 3 cm to 7 cm.  Finally, as of September 24, 2007, he still has 3 tumors.  While the smaller 2 tumors have not changed, the original tumor that started out at 3 cm is now 10 cm.  Currently, my father has not yet had any treatment.  He has a meeting next week with the doctors.  It is his contention that at this point, it is probably too late.  Is he correct?  Even if he does get treatment, does that merely prolong his life by only a short period of time?  I appreciate anyone who can share any thoughts.

My father-in-law was diagnosed with stage IV advanced primary liver cancer yesterday.  His oncologist recommended Nexavor which is manufactured by Bayer.  It is not yet approved by the FDA to treat LIver Cancer.  It is approved only for Kidney Cancer however studies indicate that it will add 3 months of quality life.  His oncologist said he is filling out paper work to see if Bayer will provide it for him since insurance will not cover it because it is not FDA approved for treatment of liver cancer.  See what his doctor says.  Also the oncologist told us that he cannot say at this the exact prognosis.  He says weeks to 1 year or maybe more.  He says this cancer is unpredictable.  He did say that rest is vital.  We are all in this together so good luck and keep us posted.

Hi there!

i want to ask you something why havent the doctors done anything for your dad sooner and allow the tumours to grow so then its too late to do anyhting. My dad was diagnosed end of march with hcc liver cancer he first went to the hospital in mid january i believe they suspected straight away but didnt tell us ran tests upon tests and then his tumor also grew to being 10cm x 12cm when they then said he was unable to have a resection and by the time they suggested to take nexavar tablets my dads health deteriorated he was on nexavar for 2 weeks but was too weak

he passed away on april the 14th. I still cant believe that my dad has gone. A man that loved life so much could never sit still for a minute has been taken by this terrible disease.

Please push for the doctors to do something for your dad. If he is fit and healthy nexavar might help at least with prolonging things. I feel for you and others that are going through this.I think for the rest of my life i will not stop searching the net and reading on all trials and hoping that they will find a cure for this awful disease.

My father was diagnosed August 23, 2007, by then it was to late.  The cancer had already spread into the lungs and into the bones.  We were told that chemo by now would just make him sicker and that he would die sooner if he decided to take it.  He eventually got very sick and was in so much pain.  The doctors told us their was nothing they could do to help him and wanted us to put him with hospice.  At first we refused we couldn't let him die without any treatment.  But we ended up accepting Hospice.  We have him home now, his pain is somewhat under control.  But he is so sick.  I don't think my daddy will be with us much longer.  My advice to you is to be with him spend every moment of your life with him, stage five gets so hard and so depressing and be there for him he is going to need you.  He is going to need to know that you care.  My best wishes to you and your father.
