My father, 60, has been diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer.  The doctors claim in is inoperable.  Worse yet, he can not have radiation, only chemo.  Does anyone know why radiation is not an option?  Should we seek a second opinion?

Ask the Dr. why radiation is not an option.  Sometimes it's because of previous radiation or where the tumor is located and always get a second opinion.  Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I would ask the doctor.  Is this your Dad's first time with cancer?  It could be because of previous radiation.  Call the doc.  A second opinion, especially if your doctor says no radiation, is important.

God Bless,

This is his first time with cancer.  No previous radiation.  I think the docs said something about mets. near the heart, and you can't radiate the heart.

They usually radiate the primary cancer and let the chemo take care of the mets, but every case is different, so don't rely on my word.

They can irradiate the disease and in almost every case some of the heart is involved or in the radiation field.  I would seek a second opinion and SEE A RADIATION oncologist.  There are times when you hold off on the radiation to see if the chemo works, but usually , even in a palliative situation , the patient would benefit from some local irradiation to maintain swallowing.
