Hello, I read you message and I am very sorry to hear about your mother.  Stage 3 is serious... My wife in 2003 was diagnosed with stage 2B, which meant the cancer spread to nearby lymph nodes.  She had surgery at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco, you are correct with regarding  Chemo Therapy and Radiation Therapy, in most cases it does not solve the problem...this type of cancer need surgery to remove it from the body.

Stage 3 is much more serious...it can mean the cancer is effecting the main blood vessels that take blood to and from the liver, or it has spread into the samll or large bowel, the stomach or the abdomial wall, Lymph nodes in the abdomen may also be affected.  This can be very serious.

As far as the Chemo and Raditaion, if it helps emotionally go for it, but I wouldn't give your mom any false hopes.  It sounds like you know how the siutation.

God Bless you and your mom, I know how hard it is and the heart break that goes along with Cancer.  Take care of yourself, your health is very import also.

Leonard

Good Morning,

It's around 8:30am here in California. Yes I also heard of Doctor Canady and his approach to solving this type of cancer.  As I mentioned in my previous email, my wife had surgery at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco in 2003 and is doing pretty well.  Through surgery the cancer is gone, but it does come with complications. Besides the surgery to remove the tumor in her Hepatic ducts, she needed a procedure called a Roux-en-Y-Loop...this procedure is done so the bile can flow from the liver through the small intestine.  The problem is, my wife is prone to bile infections and needs to visit the hospital to receive IV antibiotics. But that's no big deal when you consider the alternative.

Sorry for rambling...you asked about a surgeon's name.  Yes I have a very good and respected surgeons name.  At UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco it's Doctor Ryutaro Hirose at 415-353-1061.

As far as treatments go and knowing what I know now...surgery seems to be the most effective against this type of cancer. The tumor board ruled out Chemo and Radiation, they advised us, sugery was the only option to remove this cancer from her body.

Good luck...I hoped this helped a little...Leonard

Hello, I just received your message and I'm pleased to hear the second opinion may solve some of the problems. Thank you for your concerns about my wife...yes she is doing better, just have to live with the occasional bile infections.

I understand the doctor that gave the second opinion is indicating the cancer is in 2 parts of the bile duct and possibily the gallbladder. I see he also is indicating that the gallbladder my be inflamation only, that's very possible. Did he happen to say where the 2 parts are in the bile duct. I'm assuming if it's a Klatskin Tumor the 2 areas he is mentioning is the Hepatic Y. These are the 2 bile ducts that lead into the common bile duct system. This is where my wife's tumor was located (right at the Y). When they did surgery they remover 2/3 of the Liver, the Hepatic Ducts, the Common Bile, the Gallbaldder as well as the Cystic Ductis.

The MRI should show all areas of concern. This sounds promising...hope for surgery, without it, the situation can me difficult. Are they planning do a biopsy or has that been done already.

I understand you're feeling regarding the first hospital method of handling this serious matter. My wife was told it would be very difficult to find a surgeon that would tackle this surgery....she was given 6 weeks to live, that was in July 2003.

Things sound like they are starting to look up, I'm very happy for you and your mom. I will keep you in my prayers...look forward to hearing some good news...Remenber, you are important also...eat well and get rest...you're no good to your mom if you let yourself get run down. Talk to you later, Leonard
