Remission Vs Dormant

What is the difference between cancer being dormant when in stage 3 or later vs cancer going into remission?

When cancer goes into remission that usually means that it's "killed" but should be kept an eye on because it could come back.

My girlfriend's grandmother had cancer that went into remission...that was over 10 yrs ago and she is still alive today.
