Subject: Partial Vulvectomy postop pain

I was wondering if anyone who has had a partial vulvectomy could help me out. My surgery was near the first of August 2007, and pretty extensive in that I had somewhere around 20 stitches that extended across the left, under the vagina and half way up the right. I lost one labia minora and half the other.

My question for someone who has had the same surgery is when does intercourse stop hurting? and does surgery affect giving birth?? My fiance and I are getting married this May and I am looking forward to starting our family soon after. Right now I cannot imagine giving birth, when just intercourse causes me such discomfort.

Any advise you may have to offer would be very much appreciated.

hi there, i'm sorry that you are so worried about giving birth after surgery. I've had extensive vaginal surgery and i've given birth, the surgery was worse. the pain of childbirth is mostly the opening of the pelvis and cervix, those contractions hurt, the last squeeze through the vulva although stingy is very quick in comparison, besides, during your worst moments nothing will give you more joy and sense of accomplishment than holding the thought you are about to see your baby. of course if you really are too traumtised to give birth then ask for a section, they say fear makes it worse as the muscles tense. also, a spinal/epidural will get rid of any pain but you are more likely to end up with an episiotomy (small perianal incision). every womans childbirth is not without risk or worry, just believe that you will cope and you will. all the best, jo

Hi my name is Sue, I just had a partial vulvectomy, I had over 80 stitches. They had to reconstruct the who vaginal area and the labia. Thank goodness I did not have cancer. I was told I can not have intercourse for 4 months. I am a little afraid myself because since they have reconstructed everything the opened in alot smaller now. I guess I am also afraid if there is pain myself. I went thru so much pain for a couple of years trying to find out what was going on. I want you to know that I wish you luck and sorry I could not give you more of an answer. Good luck on your marriage and when you have a child.
