Subject: Liver cancer spread after transplant
Date: 11/11/2007

My dad was diagnosed with liver cancer in Aug 2005 and underwent liver transplant in Jan 2006.  We were recently informed that his cancer has spread to his his pelvic bone.  The doctor kept emphasizing that we can only slow down the progress of the tumors.  My dad has been very strong and I am afraid of losing him.  We are seeing an oncologist this week to get more information about his condition.  I saw lots of information on the message board for options for patients, but not much information about post-transplant patients with metastasized cancer.

Does anyone know if the treatment options are different for a post-liver transplant patient?

My husband had a liver transplant in Sept 04. In Feb. of  07 he was dignosed with liver cancer, with 2-3 years to live IF they could stop or control  the spread of the cancer. For three months he was on the drug Nexavar, then we found out that it had not done any good and that the doctors wanted to try a different cemo. This treatment was also given for three month and it again didn't work. As of a month ago my husband was placed in the care of Hospice with only a couple of months left. Each day each hour and each minute I watch my husband lose the battle he's fought so hard to win for four years. We were lucky that the transplant doctors and the cancer doctors all worked closely together. So they all new my husband condition, and work together in his care for the  transplant and his cancer. We were told before the transplant that getting cancer after a transplant is the worst type of liver cancer. That treatment are the same for the liver cancer  but the results are differnent.  I pray each day not only for my husband but for my self , that I have the strenght to see my husband through this. I wish that no person should ever have to go through what my husband and other have and are going through with their cancer. My prayers are with you, and I pray for the same strengh for you. Tre

Thank you for your reply.  My dad's doctor did not want to use nexavar as the first choice for his cancer treatment.  He recommended being part of a study drug called temsiromilus (torisel) because he was worried about drug interaction between nexavar and prograf.  was your husband on prograf?

I'm terrified of the unknowns and I wish there was something I can do.
