Subject: Anyone with elevated temp.while on Nexavir?
Date: 11/12/2007

I am a 64 year old female who, on July 2nd of this year,  was diagnosed with rcc with metastasis to brain and L lung. I have visited this site many times and have gained inspiration and knowledge regarding rrc.but did not post a message until a couple of days ago. After receiving no response, decided to post again under a different title. The first title was "Tumor fever?"

I have been on Nexivar since 9/23 and after increasing the dosage to 2 tabs twice daily, I started running a low grade temp. which, after a couple of weeks, progressed to a temp of 104.0. As I said in my first posting, my oncologist has told me that it is most likely "tumor fever". Said that when the tumor cells start "melting" that it puts off a toxin that can cause an elevated temp. My dosage of Nexivar has been reduced by 1/2 . Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I had never heard of it before but trust my oncologist to know. I am getting treatment at M.D. Anderson Cancer Treatment Center in Houston, Tex. and do feel that I'm getting the best care possible. Will go back this week to have more MRI's and CT Scans.

This is all new to me but so many of you have been dealing with this for years and been successful & courageous while fighting the battle. My heart goes out to all of you.

Sincerely

Barbara

Hello Pat,

Thanks for your reply....

How long was your husband on Nexavar before he was reduced to 200 mg a day? Did they reduce his dose due to the kidney tumor shrinking or at least staying the same size without signs of advancement? I am on 600 mg a day now and am able to tolerate this well. They took me completely off for 7 days sue to the temperature, then had me taking 400mg a day for 7 days.Last Thurs., I started on 600 mg a day and am able to tolerate this well. No fever so far!! The worst side effect is the hand /foot reaction, the painful scalp, and rashes, esp on my face. My feet get so sore I can hardly walk at times even though I'm taking extra care with them...foot cm, jel pads for shoes, etc. I still have body aches and fatigue but does not seem as bad as before.

Had MRI and CT scans last Thurs and the brain tumor shows to have grown. I'm on steroids now because the Brain Surgeon feels this might be inflammation rather than actual growth of tumor cells. Will take the Steroids for 3 weeks and go back for another MRI. If it is inflammation, the tumor will be smaller....I'm praying that's all it is. The kidney & lung tumor's were unchanged, which I'm thankful for.

My heart goes out to you and your husband and I'll add you to my prayers. God Bless,

Barbara in Texas
