Subject: No more chemo!

Hi All. firstly I wanted to say how much admiration I have for posters on this board and the way you have fought this evil scourge.

I live in Ireland.  My mother who is 60 was diagnosed with Advanced Ovarian Cancer on Oct 4.  (Stage 3c).  It has spread across here abdomen (stomach, bowel, spleen). Dr said the cancer is like a layer of cling film on these organs rather than a mass and gave her 3-6 months and reccoemended chemo.  The bowel was badly affected and she has an obstruction. they expected that 1st chemo session would resolve the obstruction.  She had that session 4 weeks ago and the bowels have not moved much at all. Anyway today the Oncologist told us there was no hope and we had to look at long term pallative care. They will not give any more chemo as she got a really bad infection last week.

I am devastated and also shocked that they will not even consider a second dose of chemo, even if her overall health improves. I also would have thought that they would need 2/3 sessions before any real impact. While I don't doubt her knowledge, I am looking for a second opinion. Has anybody experienced anything like this?  She was only diagnosed 7 weeks ago and now the doctors are talking about weeks left.   This is the worst time of my life. Any hope stories out there?

Col;

I would seek alternative therapy. Go to garynull.com and try and find a specialist that treats with holistic and alternative treatments.
I am not sure were you live but go to acam.org and try and find someone. My Mom has stage 3C her cancer has spread in the abdomen, Liver and also onto the lungs and who knows were else. Mom who has a peg tube cannot be feed because there is a tumor in the small intestine; she is in a hospice and on morphine not much we can do other than surgery which she is too weak for. I told my parents to go the Holisitc route 6 months a go to keep the cancer in check but they refused. I may have someone from an Alternative treatment center run a Vitamin C drip that may be my only hope. Hopefully the Hospice will allow this treatment. Also there is something called the Geipe therapy which may be helpful. Good luck I hope thigs turn around for you soon.

Re: No more chemo!

Dear Col,

I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom! I faced the same thing that you're

dealing with back in 2002.Then,my mom was dx with Stage 4 Ovarian

Cancer, because her primary doctor, who was an internist, ignored her

when  she told him that she had pains in her stomach and side, and

her stomach was bloated and hard, and her internist just told her to consider her age.Mom was only in her mid 70's then.A surgeon

removed all the tumors but the cancer had metasticized all through

her body. The oncologist didn't think she would live through more

than 2 or 3 chemo treatments ( one month) but she lived for almost

3 years beyond that! I had her taking an Agaricus Blasei Murril Mushroom Liquid Extract, and a Graviola Spagyric Liquid Extract.

I tried for 3 years to convince her not to take the chemo.Unfortunately,

she passed away in 2005,and I still miss her terribly every day!

She didn't die from the cancer,on her death certificate it stated

Cachexia (malnutrition) as cause of death.Taking all those drugs her

doctors prescribed, and all the chemo, she starved to death!

There is hope you just have to know where to look!

My very best wishes to you and your mom!

Gail

So sorry to hear your story. Please seek other cancer doctors and cancer centers. There is always hope. Good luck.

Hi,

I was very saddened to read your note.

First of all, I would never accept ONE physician's opinion, especially when he tells you there is no hope. I went to see 5 different doctors a few years ago,  2 in my home country,Canada, and 3 others in the U.S. before figuring out what to do. However, you mom may be too ill to travel and this may complicate the situation.

Is your mom being treated in a Cancer Center? If not, perhaps you can have her seen in one. Is there one close by? If not, perhaps you could contact someone at the nearest cancer center and go see him/her with your mom's tests results, MRI's and any other imaging films, and perhaps your doctor would agree to speak with this specialist.

When they tell us here that there is nothing to do, we always ask about experimental treatments. There may be one that your mom may qualify for. These could give hope.

Good luck to you and your mom,

G.

HI, it's me again. See the message of Nov.11, 07 on the message board about Novel therapy; the use of Avastin and experimental studies. there is a researcher's name in the U.K. He may be a good link to what may be possible to try.
