My sister has had breast cancer 3 times and brain cancer. She lives in a remote part of Oregon. To go to chemo and/or radiation, she has to travel 2 hours. Her Doctor gave her some more bad news last week after her CAT and a PET scan, so now he said he can put her on the "chemo pill". She got her prescription from her Doctor today. She has medicare and the Oregon Health Plan. When she went to fill her prescription, one pharmacy said it would cost her, $3000.00, she doesn't have that kind of money. Her friend took her prescription to another pharmacy, they said after medicare pays, my sister's balance would be $200.00, she doesn't have that either. Is there any help out there, or does she have to make the long trips back over the hill to chemo, which she won't be able to do, she no longer has the strength to carry on.
I am 3 hours from her, please if anyone knows of something please help me.
Thank you,

The Hill Burton organization 800-638-0742 gives grants to people who need medical care, but don't have insurance. An organization called Cancer Care 800-813-4673 also assists people without health insurance.

The links below can help people obtain free or reduced prescriptions. I hope these resources are able to help you get the care you need.

Hi Kathy
The same thing happened to me, only my scare is ovarian not cervical--I went to the ER with no money or health insurance--When the ER dr told me I had to stay overnight for a biopsy I was almost in tears worrying how to pay for this. The ER dr. put me in touch with the hospital social worker-he gave me the number to public assistance which I did not think would help me because I have a job. I was so wrong! I called the number, went in to talk to a case worker (also brought my medical records from the hospital!) and they were as nice as could be. I now have coverage with Medicaid( I left the office with coverage!) which has eased my worrying unbelievably. I had to swallow my pride but this was a matter of life or death. MINE! And I did it--please don't give up-exhaust all options and then be persistant and do it again. Also many hospitals have grants that are there for people who cannot pay-tell admissions when you go and get the forms---it never hurts to apply! Good luck with everything!--I wish you the very best!....Christine
