My husband was diagnosed with stomach cancer, stage 4.  He had his whole stomach removed because of a bleeding ulcer and they found 41 out of 45 lymph nodes infected with cancer.  We have a beautiful and healthy little 4 year old that he needs to live for.  We are really stuggling with his eating.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Please help. We are desperate!

reoking,

hello. i am so sorry to hear about your husband. this is a tough journey. i would tell you to read alot of the old posts and responses. there is alot of info within them. also seek help w/ a nutritionist. they can devise a feeding schedule and tell you what to and not to eat.

there is a post on here not too far down about a woman that has been eating smoothies from the "smoothie king" chain. i have gotten my father who also has stage 4 stomach cancer onto these and there has been a slight improvement in weight. although....i am sad to say...for my father we didn't catch the cancer in time and there isn't much hope. but try these or go to a GNC store and get some protein powder to put into milkshakes. something to help keep the wight on. make one and have him just takes sips/spoonfuls all day long. most have 700-1000 calories. so if he drinks it throughout the day...he will help w/ adding weight.

adding weight or even sustaining weight will keep his energy levels up. also....if he is far enough after surgery, have him go for a walk (short one will do) to keep everything flowing...blood supply etc.

i wish your family all the best. please keep us updated. take care and many hugs to you. kris

thank you for your quick response Kris.  Any help we can get is most helpful.  He was operated 4 weeks ago and his weight is holding steady.  He has a VERY positive attitude and is trying to eat more solids each day.  I'm praying for a miracle at this point.

Has your father's cancer spread?  How long ago was he diadnosed?

my dear sweet father has always been strong and healthy. this summer he started getting very tired and had flu like symptoms for a few weeks on and off. so on july 12th we took him in for a check up...and  4 days later they found cancer in his stomach. 2 days after that they found spots on his liver.

on august 1st he had 40% of his stomach removed along with all the cancer that was in his stomach. but, sadly...they found that his liver was badly damaged. about 30 tumors and his lymph nodes are heavily infected as well. the colon has a spot also. his liver is too far gone. too many tumors spread out too far. we can only hope at this point.

but, i am doing everything. i have googled everything and gone to youtube.com and gotten at least 20 books from the library. we go to whole foods and we juice anything green. he now drinks smoothies to add weight. and we put soy protein powder ( from GNC) on & in almost everything we can. he was holding steady for awhile. but now can't eat much at all. we are trying all we can. never giving up as long as he has no pain. he needs lots of rest all day long. he sleeps about 9-10 hours a nite and needs a 2-3 hour nap a day. but he doesn't sleep all day long, yet.

keep the hope, do all that you can. fight with everything you have to help the situation. i have read some amazing stories. faith and prayers are so powerful. keep me posted as i will you. feel free to hit the private reply and email me.

peace, hope and hugs to you and your family, kris

Either feed him protein shakes or mass gainer shakes from GNC/Vitamin Shoppe. Make sure it's 100% natural whey protein though. Luckily since I lift weights I already have this stuff in the house so I feed my father 2 of these shakes a day. My father hasn't really put on additional weight, but he is at least maintaining it. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you :)

hello mike, i am wondering about the protein shakes. i got the soy protein instead of the whey protein cuz the back info showed that the soy had more protein. is the whey better? i don't know much about this stuff. thanks for your help. how are things with you? we are having a good week here. that's all i can ask for.  keeping you in my thoughts, kris

Hey Kris - Whey protein is packed with more amino acids which can help boost the immune system.  Whey protein also gets absorbed more than Soy.  I have tried both and can honestly say that I get bigger and put more weight on with Whey protein.  Whey also packs a little more calories, rebuilds cells, and usually boosts more energy.  Make sure you get 100% natural Whey (which is usually made from cow's milk, egg whites, etc.)

My dad is finally starting to feel better today.  He has to go back in for chemo next week though for 7 days straight...then he gets to come home and feel like crap for a week, ughhh    I hope all is well with yours :)

thank you so much mike. you always are so informative. i feel so lost on this journey.

my dad is not doing too well. he has taken a 2 week break from chemo, but is to start again this coming monday. but....i have a feeling he may be done. i had to take him to the hospital last week...and i honestly thought that i would never be bringing him home. we will see. i think things are moving faster than i would like. thanks for all the support. i am sending positive vibes to you and your dad...i hope this next round isn't too hard on him. kris

Hi Reoking,

Please refer to my posting entitled 'post-surgery (suggestions)'. It may be of help. Include lots of fruits in his diet as well. I'm having my brother started on an immune support system program next week. I'll keep you posted on his condition after abt 2-3 weeks. Please feel free to ask and share. That's a lot that we can learn from one another. May God bless your husband and you.

Regards,

Gowrie
