I had an abnormal pap back in June.  They tested for HPV, it was present.  I had a colposcopy/biopsy/ECC in July.  The ECC came back normal and the biopsy taken at 1:00 came back consistent with my pap results--mild dysplasia.  I am supposed to go back for another pap in January.  Is there anybody out there who went back for their follow-up pap and instead of getting worse it had cleared or stayed mild?  I am really hoping it clears on it's own.  Is that common or does it usually progress?

 Thanks!

Hello Heather, be very watchful with the HPV diagnosis. I am a 30 year survivor of cancer which started in the female organs and had advanced, over many surgeries when I was young .It did go into remission for 20 of those years.  In my 40's it returned and several operations had to be done again, the last in 2004 was the worst.  All were caused from that virus is the thoughts of my doctors.  If you watch its progress, test often, at least once every year, and watch for signs such as numerous female infections, you can keep healthy.  .  Most any cancer when discovered early is treatable.  I could go on in depth, but at this point all you have to do is be watchful and keep your doctors aware that is was discovered. Ask your doctors to tell you everything about this Virus.  Shirley {Now age 62.)  Take Care and have a wonderful Life.. On 11/18/2007 Heather2 wrote:

Heather,

I would also agree with the poster above and say do some research yourself, and listen to your body.

I know that mild dysplasia (and an HPV infection) clears on its own a lot of times, but a lot of times it doesn't.  I was in the same situation as you.  Last year i had ASCUS w/ HPV and they did the colpo and it confimed the diagnosis.  So we just watched it for a year w. pap's every 6 months.  At the year mark it was LSIL w/ HPV changes again.  Again, repeat colpo... yadda yadda...confirmed the dysplasia.  But because the abnormalities HAD progressed, my doctor did a LEEP.  My feeling is this - it is better to nip something in the bud before it has the chance to progress or spread.

I hope this helps, take care.  (take a multi-vitamin too!)

:-)

Thanks to both of you for replying.

I find as my follow-up pap date gets closer (it's Jan 8th) I'm getting nervous and starting to worry.  I managed to sort of forget about it for awhile.  Or at least not stress about it.

My dr. said we would do the follow-up pap and hopefully it would clear on it's own.  If it gets worse she'll refer me to the gynecologist for a LEEP (the woman who did the biopsy is a P.A.).  And if it stays LSIL (after another colposcopy/biopsy I imagine) well. . . I'm not sure.  Maybe another pap in 6 months.

I have been exercising, taking a multi-vitamin, probiotics and also DIM.  I eat a pretty healthy diet also.  It's just kind of exhausting to know that something is wrong but not to know what it is doing in the interim between my biopsy and next pap.
