Preventing mouth sores and burn

Someone passed this tip on to us and we have shared it with many that have helped them.

If you suck on and chew ice the entire time you are getting your chemo then it will freeze the mouth cells.  This prevents them to be damaged so much by the chemo.  The minute the chemo starts to enter you until the last drop goes in, you need to keep ice in  your mouth.

My mom did this for 3 entire hours straight.  The one time she stopped to eat a sandwhich half way through her mouth warmed up and she got the burn a little worse.

The first time she had chemo she did not know to do this and 100% of her mouth and throat was burned.  She said it felt like somone took a blow torche to her mouth.  After the ice tip she only have about 10% of the burn.  She was doing Taxotere and Carboplatin.

Hope it helps!  God Bless you!

This is a great tip.  I wish I would've had it before because my husbands mouth was extremely sore, burned, and a mess.  He passed on Saturday but in his last 3 weeks, he was in great discomfort because of the sores due to his final treatment.  Thank you for the tip and I hope it helps someone out there struggling to survive this terrible disease.  kassi
