http://tinyurl.com/ ) is a a url generated by a free service which takes very long urls and assigns them to a short, more easily handled (and emailed) urls. The long url it points to might by anything. I have used tinyurl often to create more easily handled urls to medical journal articles, etc. I consider a tinyurl to be very appropriate, and very useful.
