Hello,

This is my first posting. I've been diagnosed with anemia and my hematologist has suggested a bone marrow biopsy. This has me very nervous as I have heard it is a really painful procedure. I asked him if I could have light sedation and he said it wasn't necessary. I don't know if I'm over reacting or if having this procedure doesn't warrant sedation. I'm thinking of getting a second opinion and seeing if there are other physicians who would use conscious sedation or something similar. I'd like to hear what others have to say. Thank you.

My 23 yr daughter just had one,,,, and not to scare anyone, but it was Barbaric!!!  They gave her now sedation.... the numbing medication applied to the skin, before they make the incision, wasn't even administered for more than 20 seconds before the DR cut her!!  It was horrible.... I would defiantly ask for some sort of sedation, or be put under.

However, what I have been reading every person is different.  Some sites say it is uncomfortable and children can tolerate the pain.

Ok  your right it was horrible  Im undergoing chemotherapy on my 4th treatment.  I will be having a bone marrow soon and my body shakes in fear everytime I think about  it.  Im not sure what these Doctors are talking about but its not minimal pain.  Its really bad!  Im 30 yrs old and I cannot think of worst more uncomfortable pain than this.  My next Dr visit i will be asking him if I can be completely put out.
