Subject: Side-effect of Nhl???
Date: 04/11/2005
My mom was diagnosed with Nhl in Nov. 04 after having been cancer free for over 11 years! She had been receiving chemo and the last three treatments were pretty rough. Getting a little worse with each one. The final treatment was three weeks ago and she spent the last two weeks in the hospital. What I am concerned with is the possible memory loss that she has?? I was wondering if anyone else has experienced that?? She wants to say something and gets frustrated with herself when she can't finish her sentence. And she also now has a bladder control issue. I am wondering if the last treatment has "destroyed" her insides?? -Kim

'chemo brain' is a common side effect that goes away with time, most of us are finally able to laugh about it.

"destroyed her insides' is a little strong, I'd say ..though some of the side effects can be harsh.

You didn't say what kind of chemo she had nor why they kept her inthe hopsital so long.

You might want to take a look at some of the more active message boards.

Hope she continues to improve and the the chemo buys her another 11 years.

She had originally gone into the hospital because her blood count dropped so dramatically. They gave her blood, her sugar levels(she's also diabetic)would drop and rise and they began giving her insulin and such. I kind of thought that because of the memory thing that maybe they had let her slip into a diabetic coma or something. Then her kidneys/bladder began bothering her and they thought she had a bladd infection and found out it was bladder spasms. That's why I had said that I thought her "insides were destroyed" because we had never heard of such a thing happening with chemo and it had all started about a week after her last chemo treatment. I had never heard of "chemo brain". I didn't expect this because we didn't have this happen 11 years ago!! Thanks for your reply - Kim

You're welcome Kim,

You didn't say what type of nhl your mom has? or what type of chemo?...this must be a very scary confusing time for you and your family. I'm sorry that you're having to deal with this at all and am glad that you're reaching out.

Would you like addresses for more active message boards?

Best wishes djc
