Subject: Ischemial Bowel Disease as a side effect of any of the treatments?
Date: 12/26/2007

Hi,

My dad has been on all the recent cancer treatments including Nexavar, Sutant, and now Toricel. After two treatments with Toricel, he developed ischemial bowel disease, ie. a intestinal obstruction in the distal ileum that perforated and caused an infection in his peritoneal cavity that was very critical. The doctors don't know if this was caused by any of the cancer treatments and if so which one...so they are very hesitant to put him back on any treatment and have pretty much told him that this might be the end of the line for them. Can anyone please share some of the side effects that they have suffered from the treatments especially if it's related to bowel disease? We desperately need this information right now to decide whether to risk another intestinal obstruction and keep on going with the treatment. Thanks so much!

I have not taken any of these drugs.

Torisel has been known to cause bowel obstruction.  It makes sense that drugs such as Stuent or Nexavar, which have antiangiogenesis (restricts the growth of tumor blood vessels) effects might aggravate ischemic bowel disease or healing.
