Stomach Fluid

My sister, age 48, was diagnosed with Stage IV stomach cancer in April, 2007.  She was not able to have surgery as it is inoperable.  She has been tolerating her chemo, and the oncologist says they will keep doing this as long as she tolerates it.  The last couple of months she has been having fluid build up and she then goes in to have paracentesis (removal of the fluid).  She then feels alot better.  I am wondering if this fluid retention will ever stop with chemo or does this mean she is not going to be with us for much longer.  She has a great spirit and really wants to beat this; however I am worried.  Does anyone out there have the same situation?  I would appreciate anyone with a similar situation to give me their input.  This stomach cancer is a real horrible disease.  It seems that when she fills up with fluid; she throws up alot.  It is a tough road.  Please let me know if anyone out there has any input.  Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your sister, I had little experience about stomach cancer,  I was not scared you, as my father was just pass away last month.  He was very healthy and good spirit, he believed Doctor can save his life as the CT scan show up my father had a tumo 2.5 x 2.5 , doctor did a surgery and removed a tumo and 3 out of 5 lymp nodes, stage 3.   I think a surgery did not sucessful as a doctor told my father before a surgery as a chemotherapy.  Before a surgery, we should tell my father find more Excellent doctor and Biopsy before a surgery. My father was in a hospital 2 months with all fluid came out at the plastic bags, doctor told my father can go home with all these bag, we have to drain out every day for my father.  I felt pain for my father,  he couldn't eat, pain medicines made my father less pain, but it was damage my father nerves and he felt dizzy and weak.  My father spirit was great, he talked to us everyday.  He hoped doctors can save his life.  Later, doctor said cancer can spread out to my father lung, kidney, etc. my father stopped his breath and died. It was pain alot for us.  I think you should spend times with your sister.  Research more all of this website, if news medicines IP-6 cellular can save your sister life. I hope, I have more experience to tell or help more cancer people.

Hi Anncher! My father passed in Nov 2007 of stomach cancer, and fluid build up was one of his problems as well. We weren't really sure what caused this problem, but someone mentioned to us at one time i think that the tumors give off fluid as well. (Please don't quote me on this though)  I know it is a rough and painful road. I miss my Dad so much.  I would ask the docs if they can arrange a pleurex tube (I think that's what it was called) The docs had done this for my father so that he could drain himself when needed instead of having to go to the doctor every week.  My Dad got to the point as well where he would vomit everything because there was so much fluid buildup.  It was the only way he could even attempt to eat anything before we had to switch to tube feeding.  Keep your head up and remember you're not alone!

 My sister is 50 and also has stomach cancer, stage iv when diagnosed.  She was in the hospital a couple of weeks ago with fluid buildup but they did not remove it.  She was just admitted again this week with even more buildup.  I had to beg to get them to remove it.  They removed 5 liters.  That was three days ago and she is filling back up again.  The doctor talked to us yesterday about contacting hospice.  She has infection so I don't know if they will drain her again or not.  She actually didn't feel much better after they drained it.  I'm glad to hear your sister got some relief from it.  They had told us that is might come back in minutes, or hours, or days.  I don't care if it was 2 hours.  That would be 2 hours of relief was my thinking.  I know everyone responds differently but it is interesting to share stories.  I hope the best for you and your family.

hi my names jenna and my nan is suffering with stomach cancer. she was told that she had only a year to live but that was nearly 3 years ago so the doctors are not always right. she was never told wether they could operate but it could be because of her age which would have more risks (shes 77). over the last year or so she also has built up alot of fluid in her legs and around her stomach and lately has been quite sick. i have been reading up on it and seems that the fluid is causing a blockage in the digestive system which would be the reason why the sickness is there but aswell she has been taking iron tablets as her iron is low and seems to have been sick since so if thats the case with youre sister it may be the reason. i dont know if it has anything to do with it but since my nan has had the sickness the fluid in her legs has gone down but dont really understand why? the fluid(also known in lymphoedema) is quite a common symptom in cancer patients and doesnt mean that their at the final stage of cancer. i agree with you its an absolute awful illness for somebody to go through and my heart and prayers go out to your sister and you. please let me know if you find out any more info or let me know how your sister is doing sometimes it helps to talk to someone as im having a hard time to with it all. my nans my guardian angel. thanx jenna
