Subject: Help... Passing blood in urine
Date: 01/02/2008

My Dad is on cycle 1 of Sutent, for RCC stage IV, with mets in lungs and lymph nodes. He has been passing drops of blood in urine and doc suspected infection and prescribed an antibiotic. But the bleeding has not stopped and today he passed a large amount of blood and he seems to be losing bladder control.

Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Is this normal? I am worried about internal bleeding.

Please help!

Thanks for any suggestions and advise.

go to a urologist ASAP. I too has experienced like that with a lot of blood clots. After an untra sound and an CTSCAN it was found out that i have tumor on the Kidney.

Thanks. Yes, my Dad has tumor in his kidney. The bleeding started after he was diagnosed and started treatment with Sutent. Surgery is not an option for him.

How did your bleeding stop?

Thanks so much.

Hi. Has your Dad had anymore tests (MRI, CAT, etc.), to see if spread in bladder? My Dad started with blood in urine, treated for infection, had catheter put in, and then a few months later found bladder/urothelial cancer, stage IV. The blood and clots were pretty bad at times, along with constant feeling of urination (before catheter), and eventual problems with incontinence. I am sure your Dad's docs have thought of this, but just wanted to give some information; I remember feeling that being more informed about the whole ordeal helped. You may also want to check bladder cancer advocacy network website (bcan.org) and bladder cancer webcafe (can't recall website off hand), there may be people there that can give you some more information (perhaps regarding sutent). My thoughts and best wishes are with your Dad, you, and your family.

i have an operation STAT, removing my right kidney. Why did you say operation not an option ? what stage is it now ? Is the attendting physician of your dad a urologist ? You should go to competent doctor.

Thanks for the responses.

My Dad had PET scan done, that is how the tumors were found. Finally a urologist saw him yesterday. He says that the kidney needs to be removed asap, otherwise in his words "he will bleed to death"!! So, we have no other option now I guess. The oncologists had ruled out surgery initially as my Dad had become very weak, which is what worries me.

Thanks and regards.

I just finished Gemzar/Cysplatin/Rituxan, then radiation.  I had to be admitted on Dec. 19,  2007.  I had to have 2 units of blood because I was so low and my 02 sat was 86%.  I was released on the 20th.  Morning of the 21st I found large amount of blood in my urine.  I was admitted and passed (port wine-what it looked like) until the morning of the 24th.  I was neutropenic but not febrile.  I had to wear a mask, etc.  Haven't had any blood since the 24th.  I am having a cystoscopy because the CT/scan and ultrasound showed something on my kidney.  Docs don't seem to be concerned.  Could be any number of things.  Worst case would be kidney cancer and then they would take out the kidney.  I'll let you know.  The cystoscopy is on the 31st.  Kitty

What's the results since his surgery?? I hope he came out of it alright. I didn't know if you had responded to his surgery in another topic, so I thought I'd ask here. My dad didn't have the option of surgery either because (too weak) and also it was so big and connected to major veins, etc. He had too high a risk of bleeding (and dying) during surgery. So... that's what I wanted to add. Don't know if you read in other messages, but he passed very quickly on Nov. 12th, 07. Good luck and I hope to hear how it all came out.

Thanks Cheryl. Sadly, I lost my Dad on Jan 7. He did not survive the surgery. They said they could not stop the bleeding and he had a cardiac arrest. I guess if we had opted for arterial embolization, he would have been with us for a few more days/weeks. In a way, I am glad that he didnt suffer too much and he was not conscious when he passed away. My dad was a big pillar of strength for me and I feel totally lost.

Thanks for all the responses and prayers.

Wow... I am so sorry. This disease is so nasty and my dad (nor your own) deserved it. I'm glad to hear he was such a strength in your life, I can relate. Keep any and all memories alive. That's what I do each and every day. It's by far the hardest death I've had to go through. I hope they find a cure or better treatment one day... there's many strong people on here going through similar situations. I wish everyone the best of luck.
