My husband was diagnosed in July with EC. He had surgery in August at Mass General. Excellent surgeon-Dr. Wright. Tough recovery but made it. Rick just finished 6 weeks of radiation and is feeling it. He has lost his appetite completely and is exhusted. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms? Last week he ran a low grade fever and our oncologist had him go for a chest x-ray because he also had a cough. They admitted him to the hospital with pneumonia-we thought. They put him on antibiotics intraveniously. He had fluid on both lungs. They drained 1 lung and last night we got a call from the oncologist that the fluid had some cancer cells in it. We are so upset! He was going to start chemo again but the oncologist is saying that we will have to look at a different course of treatment. Does anyone know what he might be thinking? Different chemo? Has anyone had EC and cancer cells in the lungs? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!!

My husband's EC was in his lungs when first diagnosed.  We did radiation on the esophageal tumor with systemic chemo (cisplatin-radiosensitive so it aided esophageal radiation in tumor shrinkage, docetaxol and irenotecan) to go after the lung or any other mets.  Ivor Lewis with lung resection next-lung was clean from chemo.  Six months later nodule in lung again but wanted another scan to be sure, since it was at surgical site and you don't want to keep cutting someone open if not needed.  9 months after original lung resection, did another with small piece of esophageal removed and thought that was it.  2 months later nodules in both lungs.  Planned three rounds of chemo, same drugs/bigger dosage.  After round 1, lungs clean.  After round 2, lungs clean.  3 months and 6 months later, lungs clean.  Chemo was brutal but he is still here and recuperated well (other than emergency small bowel resection last week).  Dr said the protocol we used had some of the best statistical results so we started there, but also said there were many other treatment options if he was drug resistant or something.  Believe this particular protocol was developed and studied at Dana Farber.  I researched it many months ago.
