Hello all, my name is Barry. I am new to all of this and I want to be there for my wife to the very best of my abilitys. Ivy's surgery was done on Friday, 1/4/08 and I brought her home that Saturday. Ivy seems to have many of the symptoms I have being reading about. Tremors in her hands, a bit depressed, never was an issue before, a little apprehensive and she is not really ready to tackle all of the post operative info availble to her. I was never a big researcher like Ivy is but I must acquire the knowledge necessary to propely understand and help care for her. Being a type 2 diabetic I am well aware the importance of taking medications religously and properly so I can organize, track and maintain the required meds she will need. Ivy had a total thyroidectom. The needle biopsy leaned towards follicular varient papillary carcinoma. Surgery was done at Sloan Kettering in NY. Excellent experience but I left feeling a bit under-informed regarding post operative care other than names of meds and wound care which isn't an issue for us. The surgeon believes the 2cm nodule is encapsulated and hedged his bet with a 75% chance there is no cancer. If it is, he says it will be easilly treatable with radio iodine and follow up visits. It will be a week before we know whats what. I am making an appointment with our endocrinologist so we can learn how to manage all aspects of medication and I need to learn all about proper diet for Ivy. I intend to take care of my wife with the same love and attention to details, love and understanding as she has givin to me for 30 years. Though I know in my heart Ivy will be fine I am very concerned about being vigilant regarding all of it. Can anyone please direct me to the most comprehensive sources of information concerning follow up care, diet, food and drug interactions and most importantly emotional support. Ivy is 52 and generally in excellent health. Ivy works out at the gym with a trainer 3 days a week and we walk and hike. She has always been overweight, don't tell her I told you, and as strong willed and positive as they come but this has her down. I know its going to take some time to regulate and understand everything but I want to get started now. We knew there would be issues following surgery but we are both a bit overwhelmed. Thank you so very much for any help you can offer.
