Tumor Removal

My doctor just found a small tumor in the lower portion of my bladder. He stated that it needs to come out ASAP and that because of the location sometimes during surgery the bladder may tear causing a hole. I would have to have a catheter until it heals. Do I need to be concerned, if there cancer cells they may spread to other parts outside the bladder? Has anyone had a similar experience and can offer some advice? I am only 44, my dad just had his bladder and prostate removed due to cancer.

Hi Jean. I hope this meassage finds you well! Thank you for sharing your story. At first my mother was diagnosed with urachal adenocarcinoma. After it traveled from her bladder to the orbital area...it acquired a middle name due to the type of tumor. She had similar surgery to her bladder and most recently a craniotomy. They are discussing further treatment at this time. Was your tumor mestatic? Where are you being treated? and most importantly, how are you feeling now?

Dear Dave,

You should have the tumor removed ASAP, if you haven't already. A pathology report will let you know if it is/was cancerous. If it is then PET scan will determine if any active cancer cells anywhere else in your body. My mother only had her catheter in for a week or so. Once it was removed she was a happy camper! stayed at home basically, left the house a few times with it, very concealable. I hope things are going well for you. Try to relax and keep a positive attitude. Please keep us posted.

Thanks, Paula. The tumor was transitional cell stage 1 carcinoma. There is no immediate treatment for now except for a complete scope of the bladder every 90 days, for two years. If they find any growth at the time of the exams then they will start a treatment program. What is a PET?
