hi.  my husband is undergoing chemo for prostate cancer, very rare type.  our insurance only pays so much.  he was going to the v.a. hospt. where his medicare cannot be used.  we are thinking of changing to another hospt. where med. and bc/bs can be used together.  but how do we pay the existing bill?  it is so high and we do not have the money.  we cannot borrow it.  what do people do in cases like this.  he is getting ready for a lupron  transplat in his arm and that will cost a bundle.  any help would be appreciated.  thanks. ml

I would go to the financial office at the hospital and try to apply for financial hardship. Some hospitals offer this. Speak with a Social Worker and get her to help you. Also try CancerCare, there phone # is 1-800-813-4673.  Speak with a social worker at the hospital about charity care or indigent care programs. The National Cancer Institure Cancer Information Service can direct you to local programs as well. Call 1-800-4CANCER.

Also try these.

Patient Access Network Foundation 1-866-316-7263 www.patientaccessnetwork.org.

Healthwell Foundation 1-8800-675-8416 www.healthwellfoundation.org

Patient Advocate Foundations Co-Pay Relief Program 1-866-512-3861

www.copays.org

Patient Services Incorporated (PSI) 1-800-366-7741 www.uneedpsi.org

Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA) 1-888-477-2669

www.pparx.org

If you are an older person you may be eligable for additional benefits. Eldercare Locator, a public service of the U.S. Adminstration on aging connects older Americans and their caregivers with sources of information on senior services, 1-800-677-1116 or www.eldercare.gov.

Hopefully one of these Sercices can help you.

Best of luck
