My dad just finished up with his 1st cycle of sutent (37.5 mg). His doctor has been running blood tests on him every 2 weeks. His white blood cell count has dropped both times. His overall WBC now is at 2. However, his nuetrophil count is still good at 1300.  Has anyone else experienced low white blood cell counts while on sutent? Does it get better or worse with cycle progression? Is there any additional precautions my family and I should take? We are already making sure to wash our hands, using purell, etc.. to avoid catching any colds etc.

Any advise would be helpful. Thanks.

Dear amsp00

My husband is on his 4th round of sutent. 1st round he was on 50mg a day for 4 wks (weekly blood tests) with his RBC and WBC dropping in last week but they bounced back at the end of the 2wks off. 2nd round WBC dropped 82 in 4th wk again came back after 2wks off. Oncologist didn't have 37.5mg tablets so changed him to 50mg 2days on 1 day off because of blood count dropping again was fine until 4th wk when blood count dropped 86. Oncologist tried this unusual 2 on 1 off for another 4 wks but results not at good as hoped so is trying 50mg 2wks on 1 wk off to see if it helps. Obviously my husbands WBC is not as low as your fathers but we found it came back to normal on the weeks off. A number of people are on the 2wks on 1wk off so this might be an option for your father to check out with his oncologist. I hope this helps. I have found this website great and by looking back at what others are experiencing it helps you to go forward.
