Hello All,

Someone from the EC message board referred me to yours because I am interested in homeopathic treatment for my dad's severe nausea. I was told that PHOTOG was very knowledgeable about it. To make a long story short he was diagnosed 12-18-07 with EC. After alll the tests we found out there is a small mets. mass in the tip of the right lung. Since diagnosis daddy has been hospitalized twice for dehydration. He went for chemo today but was admitted because of his severe nausea. He received one treatment of cisplatin and irinotecan 8 days ago. When he was discharged from the last stay (1-10-08) he weighed 183. He weighed 170 today. At Thanksgiving he weighed 210 lbs. He has a PEG tube because he can't swallow anything-not even his own saliva. He started out pretty good with it for a few days but now loses everything.

I have read about some homeopathic remedies for nausea and at this point we are willing to try almost anything! When I asked the dr. about it today she said not to use them while he's on chemo because it interferes with it.

Please respond with any advice that might help!

Thanks

I'll get back to you on this one. However, let me state that homeopathy in no way whatsoever interferes with chemo. It is true that some natural products might interfere, but not homeopathy.

Craig

Has he tried Emend???   It's the newest anti-nausea drug for chemo.  Works miraculously. He takes one pill a day starting before the chemo, then several pills for the next few days.  It saved my mom after her first hospitalization from chemo.  NEVER any nausea after she started taking it.  (it blocks different receptors in the brain)

I also wanted to say that the Cisplatin is a known highly emetogenic drug. (causing vomiting)  You need much more than homoeopathic remedies to combat this poison.  Please check into the Emend.

He was given emend prior to chemo and two tablets on day 3. He did ok. We are in the hospital now and they are trying reglan (sp?) and continuing with zofran. So far so good. Hasn't had anything in the tube yet. Keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks for the advice

(See my response below about emend) I was interested in homeopathy to go along with conventional meds. Now the dr. has me scared to try anything. This is so difficult...

Nux Vomica is the traditional homeopathic remedy for nauseau. Homeopathic remedies are completely safe to use with chemo. No interference whatsoever. Natural products (e.g. herbs, vitamins, etc.) have to be monitored because some them might have negative interactions, but that is the beauty of homeopathy. My experience though is that many/most physicians don't even know what homeopathy is or how it works, so automatically through it into the "natural" category.

Craig

So Craig, just what is the difference between homeopathy and natural products.  I was going to suggest to Georgiesgirl that she try Ginger, for having used Emend myself I wanted something more natural.  The ginger did work, and did not have any problem with interaction with the chemo that I was on,  but was this homeopathic or just something 'natural' in the herbs/spices range?   I found that peppermint tea was also very useful together with the ginger capsules.   Thanks, in anticipation. for your help in clarifying this matter!  Cath

Good idea about both Ginger and Peppermint. But it is good to check with the pharmacist because - with Velcade for instance - one is not supposed to eat grapefruit. It interacts badly with the medication. Strange things like that. I'm sure the ginger and peppermint are fine though.

Natural products (e.g. herbs, foods, vitamins, etc.) are completely different from homeopathy. In simple terms, homeopathy is made from substances that - if undiluted - would cause symptoms similar to the disease you are trying to cure. However, in homeopathy the substance is diluted to microscopic levels which removes the side effects yet causes the body to react at a very subtle yet powerful way to cure the body of that disease (i.e. like cures like). For instance, insomnia might be cured with an homeopathic remedy made of diluted coffee. Cancer remedies are made from cancer tumors. The controversy is that the substance is diluted to scientifically undetectable levels. My personal experience though, with myself and others, is that homeopathy can be an extremely powerful cure and works extremely well in conjunction with chemo.

I hope this helps.
