but moved on to Torisel and got good results. My husband has stage  4 kidney cancer. he has a large  pelvic lesion which causes him extreme pain. He is on very stong painkillers which help tolerate the pain.

Unfortunately he failed his first treatment which was a clinical trial of Nexevar, xeloda, Gemzar for 4 months. the lesion grew. He was then switched to Sutent after the first 28 days his tumor was stable it did not shrink but for the first time in almost a year it did not grow, Unfortunately the next round of Sutent for 28 days, the tumor started growing again.

Now his oncologist wants him to try Torisel I would realy like to hear from someone that had similar situation and got good results from Torisel .

Bless you all thank you Mutha

My husband is 60 and has had renal cancer for over 3 years.  He has had his kidney removed, surgery to remove tumor from his spine a year later and his hip replaced due to destruction from the cancer a year after that.  He has mets in his lung and some cancer in the pelvic area.  He failed nexavar a little over a year ago - no appetite, lost a lot of weight and developed congestive heart failure.  The lung mets were progressing.  He went into home hospice care last January because they said that the sutent was pretty much the same as the nexavar and wouldn't help him.  With heart meds he improved to the point that he went out of hospice and started the torisel when it was approved in July.  He has been on that since with two short breaks when he developed slight pnuemonia.  He has felt pretty good on the Torisel and his appetite has been OK.  In the beginning he had a metalic taste in his mouth when he ate but that seemed to go away after a few weeks.  The major problem he has had is severe foot pain and leg cramps with swelling in his feet and ankles.  The tip of one of his toes has turned black.  We don't know if it is because of the cancer or the Torisel.  He has not been able to lay down for over a month because his feet throb when he does.  He has been sleeping sitting up in a chair.  Last Friday they ran several tests to check the circulation in his legs and feet but we won't have the result on that until next week.  The good news is that the first scan showed some minor shrinkage in his lung mets and his last scan a month ago showed everthing still stable.  His oncologist has decided to give him a 2 month break from the treatment and see what happens.  Hope that is the right thing to do but it seems like they don't know themselves because it is so new.  We are hoping his feet issues clear up because other than that he feels pretty good.

All of these new medications do seem to extend life.  But they also cause a lot of other problems too.  It is a big Catch 22.
