Renal cell carcinoma – clear cell type- is a slow growing tumour it takes years to grow.
Question you have to ask your oncologist
Given that the tumour is small less than 4 cm you can have a partial nephrectomy. Mine was a bit larger and I underwent partial nephrectomy with great results. That was in September 06. I was diagnosed in Oct 05. Because of the slow growths of the tumour surgeons put me of repetitively.
You should have a CT, MRI and the most important Bone scintigraphy to see if the tumour did not metastasised to the bones. In addition you should ask if it is the left Kidney or the right Kidney there are differences and what Kidney system is involved. Is the Vana Cava involved and so on.
Given that the tumour is so small I think you should insist on partial. It also depends if you have other medical problems like diabetes, heart problems, and you age. Doctors tend to take the kidney out once you are over 55 years of age don’t let them; Kidney don’t grow back!
I will suggest to you to go to a local university if you have one and go to the medical library and look up Renal Cell Carcinoma and you will find may interesting articles that you will understand and can ask questions. You also can go to Google Scholar and look for articles that you can retrieve later in the medical library for no cost only the photo copy cost. Staffs at the medical library are very helpful to individuals that have no clue in medicine.
