I wonder what the problem could be that my mom would get shakes (no fever)???  Yesterday her insulin was low so they (hospital staff) gave her an injection.  Today her potassium was low so they gave her 3 tablets.  Anyone have any experience with this?  She has no fever right now so we don't think it's associated to that.  We will ask her Dr. when he comes in today.

Jamie,

I've mentioned this to you previously, but because of all the other issues I'm sure you may have forgetten.

You don't need a fever to have body chills...

BODY CHILLS ARE NOT GOOD...IT'S A SERIOUS INFECTION AND MOST OF THE TIME IV ANTIBIOTICS ARE THE ONLY SOLUTION.

It sounds like your mon has not made it to the Mayo Clinic yet.

That's also too bad...

Jamie,

I agree with the previous poster, shaking is not a good sign.  When my dad suddenly had the chills, we took him straight to ER.  They could never find the source of infection even after numerous blood draws.  They tried several IVATB but dad eventually succumbed on 01/04/08.  His postassium levels fluctuated quite a bit as well, necessitating bags and bags of IV K+ infusions.  He also became anemic and needed 3 units of whole blood transfusions.

I suggest you get the oncologist involved immediately.  Get your parent admitted right away.

Geri

She remains is the local hospital - Mayo was rescheduled until the 6th of Feb. because of the pancreatitis.  We are on day 8 this trip.  Her potassium level was low today, yesterday her insulin was low.  They give her whatever she needs to get them back to the normal range.  She has been & continues to be on 3 different iv antibiotics nonstop.  All of the other lab tests are good!  Her bilirubin is 2.1 today!!!!  She remains on oxygen, albuteral treatments every 4 hrs and Demerol, phenergan, nexium and a tablet that looks like gas-x, legs pumps and liquids.  She ate food today!  Oatmeal for breakfast and soup for lunch and supper!!  She has no sign of infection in her blood on the lab work.  No fever.  They removed the fluid from her left lung yesterday and she's breathing much better now!  Her shakes improved once the potassium increased.  I thank God for her doctors and nurses for being so attentive and thorough.  We still take it a day at a time.

Please listen to the others that have answered you. I believe your Mom has an infection. Jim used to get the shakes/chills ( riggers) a lot. He would not run a fever, nor would his blood test show any infection. It took getting doctors from infectous diseases involved to find that he had an infection in a pocket between his liver and diaphram - found via a CT Scan-look for extra air and fluid where it doesn't belong. No blood vessels in the area to speak of, hense the reason his blood work would not test positive for a true infection. A tube was put into the pocket with a bag attached for drainage. This drain and antibotics were the only thing that stopped his chills. I taught Jim how to do labor breathing, which I used during child birth, to help him get past the violent shakes. If your Mother starts to shake have her focus on a fixed object-don't let her take her eyes off of it, breath deeply through her nose and blow the air out hard through her mouth. You have to be there to coach her. Sometimes you must use a firm voice to keep her focused. Do the breathing exercise with her and keep encouraging her - tell her she is doing a great job, but to stay focused.

One time in the hospital when Jim had the riggers so bad....I had him doing the breathing exercises while a doctor sat there with her mouth open in shock. She told me once I got Jim calmed down and the shaking stopped she had never witness anything like this before.

Try it - it can't hurt. Practice it sometime when your Mom isn't having the shakes so she knows what she needs to do. It helps to relax a person. Jim laughed at me the first time I suggested it, but when he calmed down and the pain & shaking had stopped he looked at me and said, "Boy, that breathing exercise actually works!" I told him that I know it works - if I can have two babies without even an asprin by using these breathing exersices to relax....it can get you through your pain too.

Best of luck to you, don't give up!

Hello TnFishersWife

I wish I can call you by your first name, TnFishersWife sounds so formal.

Hi, this is Leonard from Alamo.  And thank you for reminding me about the breathing procedure....I forgot about it and as you know it really works. A nurse showed Karen, my wife how to do it when she was going through a very aggressive body chilled situation and/or just being very upset.

Jamie...hear what Tn is saying, she lived it and she know's what she is talking about....

Take Care Tn,

Leonard

I get the shakes with no fever every time my bile duct stent is plugged.  My temp is very low & all of a sudden in the hospital it will jump to 103. A plugged stent is a medical emergency.  The plug is caused by infection & it gets into your blood stream....sepsis.

My mom is getting out of hospital (from pancreatitis) after 13 days!  Her appt. to the Mayo Clinic was rescheduled again for Feb 25th.  Hopefully we'll get to make that one.  We hope they will have a second opinion that's more positive than the doctors here.  Mayo has better equipment and more experience and may be able to do surgery or chemo or radiation.

I asked the gastroenterologist what causes the shakes (they come and go sometimes) he said the electrolytes are out of whack and her albume level too --- no infection, her bilirubin is down to 2 now! Everything looks good on the lab work.
