Subject: After Treatment
Date: 02/08/2008
My dad had his last Chemo and radiation treatment a few days ago.  He gets another round of chemo (for 1 week) in March.  He is very tired and I understand that is apart of the treaments, But he is still losing a lot of weight and hardly eats or drinks.  He says that everything has a bad taste.  I am afriad he is going to get so weak and fade away.  Anyone have any input?  Thanks.

Those symptoms have not occurred yet for my dad but this did happen with my mother-in-law. She said that nothing tasted good and everything tasted bitter. But she said she would literally force herself to eat because she knew nutrition was so important to her recovery. The good news is that the bad taste should go away now that he has a break from chemo for a while. I'll have to ask her how long it took for her taste to return to normal.

I know it's hard, but he needs to drink for hydration. A hydrated person feels about 100 times better than a dehydrated person. I know the water tastes metallic but his body needs it. If he doesn't want to eat or drink, but has a feeding tube, at least keep him hydrated with the tube feeding water into his system. I think it's Gerri who always shares how hard it was to eat anything but she always persisted even it was just a bite at a time. The bad taste will go away.
