My mom was dx with appendix cancer in march 06. It had also spread to her omentum, ovaries and small intestines, 3-6 lymph nodes. She had surgery and they removed everything that looked suspicous. She had 1 year of chemo therapy with 5FU, avastin and a few other drugs. She has recently had another intestinal resection due to scar tissue blockage and while in there, they found more small tumors on the outside of her intestines about the size of a english peas. Does anyone know if there is experimental drugs for this type of cancer, the hospital of choice? Is radiation given with this type of cancer? She only had the chemo the first time around. She is still in hospital recoverying from surgery. I think that a second opinion would be a good idea.

Please email me back with any suggestions you may have. Dr. names or any thing at all

Thank you

Melissa

I have stage IV signet ring cell colon cancer. I received radiation for it 2 years ago with a good amount of success. I was treated at Duke Cancer Clinic in Durham, N.C. by Dr. Chris Willett and Dr. Herbert Huriwitz. I also received chemo in 2006 (Folfox regiment). Again, with good results but no complete remission. I am currently on various alternative treatments which is keeping my remaining cancer at bay somewhat.

Hi, I hope it's not too late for a response. My Mom just went through a radical hysterectomy for a cervical cancer dx and her pathology report came back showing signet ring cells present in her ovaries and lymph nodes. They now believe that her cancer may have originated from elsewhere since signet cells tend to originate from the GI tract. I just spoke to a USC physician and he said the presence of signet cells signifies a very difficult and specialized cancer to treat. My Mom is at a local hospital now and he said this is beyond their scope since academic/university hospitals are the best places to dx. and tx. these type of cancers. I would say to try and contact a renowned university hospital in your area. I hope that helps. God Bless!

sorry-additional news...the email address I posted earlier  may not be Herb Hurwitz' correct email address, but just go to Duke.edu website and search his name...you will find correct one and phone too.

Best Blessings,

ellen
