Hi,

my mom (68 yrs.) has been diagnosed with secondary liver cancer with an unknown primary. She has been through two cycles of chemo . She seems to develop asthma kind of symptoms which just wouldn't go away. She is on a bed rest since movement makes her breathing uneven and leads to asthmatic attack. I don't know what to make out of it. She is ok when I talk to her on the phone ( she lives in India ) although a little weak. Doctors have given her survival chances in terms of few months ( initially no more than three ) . Has anyone gone through similar experience -- I am trying to make sense out of this whole thing.

Your mother is very ill and if you get a chance to visit her now I would do so.  Liver cancer is very devastating and no one really knows how long one lasts, but it sounds like sooner than later. It is hard for you being so far away. Mothers tend to put positive spin on things. So go for a visit while you can. Take care and you need all the understanding and help you can get.  MMS

Thanks,

I am planning to go within the next couple of weeks. It's not easy being so far away and hearing of all the problems she goes through on a day to day basis. I have two kids who are at school  and that is where my dilemma lies. If I go that far, I will stay for atleast 2 weeks, maybe more since I would like to be of help as much as I can. My husband is very supportive but my conscience as a mother is holding me back.

Hi there

My Mum has secondary liver cancer as well. Primary is colon and it has moved into her lungs. She had a blood transfusion and oral chemo and she is now going really well.Has a lot more energy and her cancer count is way down. She has had scans and the chemo is working. My point is;What is your Mums cancer management plan. Is her cancer count reducing through the chemo? Is is the chemo making her tired and not necessarily her condition worsening? Go and see your Mum, you can never get that time back and I guarantee any time you spend with her you will never regret and it may offer you some comfort in the long run.

Good luck

Aussie jane
