Subject: 8 months post EC surgery, found mass in leg and groin
Date: 02/20/2008

At the age of 59, my father was diagnosed in January of 2007 with EC.  His tumor was 10 cm and had very strong doses of Chemotherapy along with radiation.   In June 07 he had a successful esophagectomy and was told the cancer did not spread to any surrounding organs.  Then again in August 07, he was having severe pain in his low right back, buttocks, leg and foot.  The pain was crippling and was told it was the piriformous muscle.  After 3 unsuccessful attempts at pain management, the doctor told him he could no longer help him.  He has PET scans every 3 months.  In October 07 he had his first PET scan post op. A small mass was located but the Oncologist (who is wonderful and goes out of his way to help my father) said he did not feel this was a result of the EC, highly unllikely it would travel from the Esophagus to the leg.  The oncologist along with my fathers family doctor, sent him to a neurosurgeon.  She said it was definitly the piriformous muscle and sent him to an orthopedic doctor.  The day my father saw the orthopedic doctor, who is a head honcho at UH in Cleveland, Ohio, scheduled my father for surgery in two weeks to remove the pirifourmous muscle.  That night, he ended up in the hospital w/a blood clot to the same leg.  This Doctor never caught it.  Told my mom to just put ted hose on the swollen foot/leg.  Needless to say, I told my parents they should not see this doctor again.  He had another PET scan due to the nonstop severe pain in the leg, his oncologist found another doctor, Orthopedic Oncologist.  Now, as of 2-19 they had located a mass wrapped around the sciatic nerve and into the bone and one in the groin area.  The mass in the leg is 5cm X 6cm.  Due to being on cumodin, he has to wait to see when he can start the Lovonox.  They will then do a biopsy.  My father is the second person I have heard that after EC, a mass was found in the groin area.  Does anyone know if is connected to the EC or have any information on this for us?   Nothing can move forward until his INR levels are at a good level to start the lovonex to do the biopsy to see what type of cancer it is.  We are at a loss and have no answers.  Sorry this post is so long, this is my first post.

Thanks for any help

kim

Kim, I am sorry your father is having all of these problems.  I cannot give you an answer to your question, but I just wanted you to know that hundreds of people will view your post and maybe someone else has had or has known someone with this problem and will respond.  I read all of the EC post and I haven't seen this situation addressed before .  I had stage two EC in 04, but nothing in the groin or leg.  Keep posting, this board is a great support system.

My father was diagnosed with ec, but they first found a tumor in his spine up in his neck resulting from my father complaining of shoulder pain for months.  He was stage 4 and it spread to his bones, liver, brain, and spread very rapidly.  He only had radiation, because he just couldn't get strong enough to handle cemo.  He was diagnosed 10-24-06 and passed away 1-11-07.  We were told this type adnocarsonomia cancer is very aggressive and they did all they could do.  This was the most difficult thing my family have ever went through, just stay positive and do what ever you can do.  Pressure  the dr. to do everything.  Good luck!

My dad goes in for his biopsy on Thursday and then finds out the results on Tuesday.  I will attend both of this as I am unable to in most cases due to my 5 small children.  The fear of this spreading rapidly and being aggresive is the scary part I WILL ask more questions from this Dr. this time.  It is hard to stay positve in times like this as you know.  We are trying our best.

Thanks

Kim

My father first found out he had cancer in Sept 07, due to a pain and a large mass in his arm. It actually took two months and an absolute battery of tests to find the primary, which was EC.  The tumor in his arm is very large and although they have told us his EC is inoperable and not curable it doesn't seem to be spreading rapidly or extra aggressive. His last PET scan showed a couple of lymph nodes that were positive but other then that not much else has changed. Our doctors told us that sometimes the secondary cancer can grow faster then the primary. That it only takes one cell to get out to cause spreading. So stay positive and don't be afraid of it now spreading rapidly because it may not. All the best and you are all in my thoughts and prayers
