I am looking for info for treatments to prolong life. Every minute with him is a blessing. Have they talked about chemo? I am having chemo every three weeks, with daily Xeloda. I am just finishing my second round of chemo and will have a scan next week to see if it is shrinking the tumor or not. Have they done any testing to find the primary cancer, and if not why? Get other opinions, don't just settle for one. I know with liver cancer being a secondary cancer it is harder to cure. In fact I don't know if there is any cure. But I am going to try to do everything I can to be here longer. My sister in law was told she had an unknown primary and it was in her lumph nodes. She finally went to Barnes and they found breast cancer. So don't give up, find where that cancer started. With it coming from my stomach they really treat the liver cancer as stomach cancer with the treatment. I would think it would make a big difference on how they would treat him to know as much as they can. We lost her last week on the 24th feb. She had a very advanced stage. They gave her palliative chemo, she had three cycles but it weakened her a lot. She lost her immune system almost altogether towards the end , and eventually had cardiac arrest. It is very agonising to see a close one go through this and not being able to do anything.I don't know what stage yours is at but do take couple of opinions. There are two schools of thought-- one set thinks if is advanced to just let it be and have pain management as and when needed. The other beleives in palliative chemo to slow the growth and add quality to life. In my mom's case, this did not happen.So just cherish every moment you have with him and make a decision based on what you and he feels are right after consulting the doctors.my wishes for his long life are with you.Nishi. One of the key ingredients in his success has been Dr. David Geller at UPMC's liver cancer center. He has helped so many from this site. He has incredible knowledge, success with his patients and absolutely the best bedside manner I ever thought possible in a doc. He is reknowned and yet will still consult over the phone, email or fax if you aren't nearby. If anyone has a liver cancer or liver issue, I'd put money on the fact that if anyone can help you, he can. He was diagnosed Feb. 1, 2007. The best they could tell us is that the tumors are poorly differentiated, Neuroendocrine. Most likely it began in the lungs, but we will never know. He benefited from Taxol and Carboplatin last spring. That decreased his tumors by 50%, but only lasted 4 months and they came back with a vengance. He can't handle Taxol anymore due to sever neuropathy. Unfortunately 4 tumors were found in his brain this week and he will begin whole brain radiation next week in addition to chemo (taxotere & Avastin). I wish you the best.
