Can Prostatitis Cause Psa To Spike To 30??

I was having urological problems, low back pain, loss of sex drive, etc.  Dr. said it was prostatitis.  PSA came back 15.9, so I went on cipro (antibiotic) for three weeks.  Next PSA came back 30.  Went to urologist, who said it almost assuredly was not cancer with those numbers, put me on doxycyclline for 8 weeks.  After 3 weeks, symptoms have not improved.  When driving, my low back pain spreads into the testicles and they ACHE.  Can hardly stand it.   Made appointment to see urologist again next week.  Can prostatitis cause psa to spike like this? 

Yes, prostatitis can cause a spike, but do not understand why the urologis would say "it's assuredly not cancer with those numbers".

It would pay to ask what he bases that assumption on and seek an alternative opinion.

You didn't indicate, but I hope you got a DRE, you know sticking his finger where the sun doesn't shine to check for any abnormalties. If not, then get another urologist. PSA 30 seems quite high. Have you had a biopsy? Better stay on top of it and get another opinion.

Yes, I had a DRE.  The prostate is small, but "firm" on one side.

The urologist said he had never seen a case of prostate cancer where the number accelerated that quickly that high, so it is far more likely it is caused by an infection.

Suggest get a 2nd opinion. Also ask about the (PSA  2 or free PSA).  A prostate biosy may be the final answer so you know one way or another.
