Lots Of Questions

Hi there. I am a 46 year old female who just recently had a barrage of STD testing done along with my pap. I got a call from the doctor's office today stating my pap was abnormal and they wanted to schedule me for a colposcopy (spelling?). They stated I had mild dysplasia. I had read somewhere one time that this was due to HPV? I am not really sure exactly what HPV is, except that it is a STD. The nurse stated I had been exposed to HPV. All of my paps had been normal up to this point. I had all this testing done because I suspected my "monogamous" boyfriend was  not being just with me.

I am new to all of this and have a ton of questions.  I think I read somewhere that one could have HPV for a long time and not realize it.

If this is the case that I have HPV does this mean my current boyfriend has it as well? My understanding is that there is no test for men?

You are correct that you can have HPV for years and have no idea, You did not mention how long you and your boyfriend have been together so there is no way of knowing who you got HPV from... With that said it is possible that you transmitted it to your boyfriend. The good news is that even if you did give it to him it will have little to no impact on his life, we are the "lucky" ones that get to deal with the reprocussions from this common virus..

We have been together for 18 months. I have had normal paps from the beginning of this relationship including one done this past September and now this one is abnormal.

I just question so much. I have had a feeling he has not been honest with me. But let's say I had it and passed it on to him, is there any way for him to know if he has it?

About a month ago, I was led to sexual purity (long story, has to do with my walk with the Lord and wanting to volunteer at a pregancy crisis center and it required signing a pledge for sexual purity. Which I should have had years ago! But anyway I decided to have all the STD testing and a pap done and this was my result. When he called  tonite, I told him that my pap came back abnormal and had to have a procedure done, he told me he did not understand why the doc wanted to do all this STD testing as we had been in a mongomaous relationship.. now when I told him this news , I believe he was questioning my fidelity.. oh that fried me..

I mean I have given my heart and soul to this relationship. There is so much more I could write.

Hi..I just recently found out that I have HPV and mild dysplasia..And I, like you..Haven't the slightest clue whether my boyfriend has it..It's very clear that he has been exposed because I was definetely in an outbreak ( I suffer from either strains 6 or 11)..Anyway..My doctor said that there aren't any testing for men..HOWEVER..And I know this is going to sound insane..She said that if he is suffering from the warts that go hand in hand with HPV 6 &11..That they may or may not be totally visible and there is a way to see them..She to make him sit in the bathtub with the base of his member wrapped in a towel..Leaving the shaft and head exposed..After that she said to pour white vinegar on it and after letting it set for 20 minutes..If he has genital warts they will appear like little tiny white dots if you get a flashlight and investigate it further..Now it is possible that you don't have that same strain..Therefore he wouldn't either so this test may or may not benefit you..He may or may not show signs or warts..But that doesn't mean that he isn't HPV positive..But like the poster before said..He suffers much less than you or any woman with it would..It just doesn't affect them..Do remain strong tho..I just found out yesterday and I have to make an appointment to decide what treatment will be best..I'm learning little things about it as I go and I'm glad that we're all here to help eachother!..

Thanks for your response. I really do not know to much except what the nurse told me on the phone. I go to the doctor on March 10th for the Colpopscopy. Am I nervous? Yes somewhat. I have a strong faith in the Lord and am relying on that to get me through all of this. I do not know which strain I have. Will they be able to tell me when I go to the doctor? Do they determine that with the pap and the test they may have already done or will it be determined when they do the colposcopy?

Don't look at contracting HPV as if you contracted other std's. There are people that can carry HPV in their bodies for years and years and never know,. Pass it on to someone and that person has symptoms. When I first found out I had mouth cancer and it was most likley due to HPV I flipped out because I have been married for 20 years and I know I haven't screwed around. Men cannot be tested for HPV, but women can. My wife was tested and was clear. She didn't give it to me. So, I have had it in my body for over 20 years before it showed up. My story is not unusual. I have really looked into it and have found 25 to 30 years later it shows up. They say between 75% - 90% of the adult population has been exposed to one form or another of HPV (there are 100 forms). HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer in women. That is why the CDC is suggesting that all teenage girls get a vaccine for it. Now they are considering young men as well with the rise in mouth cancer in men largely causedf rom HPV.

Hey..I'm glad that I could be of some help..To be honest I'm not sure how to determine the strain..I found out because I had the warts and that's been narrowed down to strains 6&11..But I'm sure that you can ask your doctor to clarify it for you..I wish you the best of luck..Keep in touch with me..
