My dermatologist wants me to start using carac after having just one basal cell skin cancer removed on my face.  My history (I lived in Africa as a child)  and my blonde hair and pale skin make him feel that it will recurr.  Any ideas for or against?

A discussion board is not the place for clinical opinions.  I would just suggest you research the many different treatments now available in addition to flourouricil.  For the face, my doc many times will use the "blue Light" treatments that are more tolerable to most people.  Here is a link to some basic info.

I
am 62 and did the treatment with Efudex ten years ago. It was awful but
the results were amazing. Last month I noticed another actinic
keratosis spot on my face and started treatment immediately with
Carac.I am a solid three plus weeks into the treatment. Carac is much
more gentle than Efudex for the first two plus weeks, but at the three
week stage the results are about the same. I highly recommend the
treatment. You cannot imaging how lovely your skin will be.

Hi Stuart,

I was pleased to hear that someone had used both Efudex and Carac because most of the messages are regarding Efudex.  I was wondering if there were any other differences between the two that you noticed.  Also, how long will you need to use it?  I was told 4-6 weeks...ugggh!.

I am on day 14 of Carac to my face and chest and for the last two days it seems as though the reaction is clearing up.  Maybe it's just a lull in the process but it has got me wondering.  I have dark red/purple dots on my face and the rest of my skin (on my face) is just as white as can be (confusing to me).  My chest has blotches and is red all over.  Have you started to peel yet?

Thanks,  Nan
