Hi!

I was wondering if it is mandatory for surgeons to request a CT scan immediately before surgery?   I understand that there are several CT scans taken to watch the growth of a RCC, but how about right before surgery?

Thanks!

Tom Hi!   Don't know if it's mandatory but it seems logical. When my CT confirmed RCC my Urologist operated immediately.   John

John,

Hi!

My mom had a CT scan done, for the very first time, in January. She will be having her surgery in April.   It is a low grade tumor (1.2 cm), but I am hoping that nothing has changed since that time.  I guess the surgeon can physically exam the kidney once she is opened.  Did you suffer a great deal of pain from this surgery?  Would you recommend that my mom have a private nurse?

Tom,  For me the pain was kind of rough but it will get better with time. If it's where you can have a private nurse it would be great. The first couple of weeks can be hard to do much of anything. Her being in great shape will help her rehab tremendously. My prayers are with her and you also, this disease affects everyone.  Take Care        John

I would recommend getting a CT scan at least one month prior to surgery so that there are no surprises during.  My father just had his CT scans to prepare for his surgery at the end of the month and they also suggested having him get an MRI as well to be sure they know exactly what's going on with the tumor when they go in and are fully prepared.

I wish my surgeon had.  When he went in he discovered tumor had penetrated the inferior vena cava and was unprepared for this.  As a result I had a pulminary thrombosis and clot in right lung.

I do not know if it is mandatory, however, my tumor was found on a Thursday, and I had a CT scan every day until and including my surgery, which was on a Monday.
