Subject: bulging pain anyone?
Date: 03/14/2008

I was diagnosed with RCC almost 1 year ago, emergency radical nerphrectomy was performed.  I did not have any treatments nor was I put on any kind of medication.  I have been monitored very closely, and I am participating in a cancer drug research.  The surgeon that did my nerphrectomy said that he "took every thing out on that side that I did not need."  I also have hypothryoidism, half of my thryoid, and take medication for that.  If my thryoid medicine is not just right, I have lots of issues with pain.  The research medicine that I have been taking seems to mess with the thryoid function.  I have been cancer free since 3/26/07.  I have a bulge and pain at the surgery sight.  I had some nerve blocks last year, however, I am having problems, again.  When my urologist suggested that it could be a hernia and sent me to a general surgeon, the surgeon told me that pain and a bulge just went with having a kidney removed.  He said I need some "pain management".  In all of my research on renal cell carcinoma, I have never seen this information.  I just discovered this sight, and wondered if anyone else had ever heard of this?  Or if anyone else had ever been told that a bulge and pain goes with having a kidney removed?

This would be the time that I ran did not walk to the nearest and best second opinion. I have never hear that as a "normal" reaction to a nephrectomy...

Second opinions are the most underused thing in the world. No one person is GOD so always go with your instincts and obviously yours are doubting this doc.

I have gotten several opinoins.  I have had 3 doctors tell me that it is not a hernia, I will accept that answer.  I will not accept the answer that I will just have to live with the pain.  My urologist sent me to a general surgeon, he sent me to a pain doctor.  My oncologist took CT scans and said it did not show a hernia.  I am going on Monday to see the pain doctor.  He seems more trust worthy than any of these others.  My issue is probably that I had all of the surgery and everything done in Illinois, where I loved the doctors.  We had an immediate move after the surgery with my job to Alabama.  I do not know anything about these doctors in Alabama.  Illinios seems like a long way to go to consult with a doctor.  I will wait until Monday and see what happens with the pain doctor.  Thanks for the replys, please keep me in your prayers!

hi My husband Jim had  his right kidney out in 2003 along with a lymph node and adrenal gland they said they got it all--3 yrs later in 2006 it came back in a lymph node behing good kidney and now has mets to his lungs--for the entire 3 yrs  he had a bulging pain at the surgery site --from side  across abdomen it is still bulging but doesn't hurt as much--they thought hernia but none was seen he has complained each visit but they can't seem to find source of pain and discomfort---it has gotten to be tolerable --we thought he had a incisional hernia but they could not find any thing--his muscles got lax and he sticks out more and when he has a bowel movement it seems to hurt more for  awhile but he is living with it  they say they cut  all those muscles there and that they never grow back like they were---hope this helps Peace, sue

I agree with the other reader. Please do not let the pain doctors do anything until you have scans to check for any masses. Oncology is a quirky thing and MD Anderson is not far. Check it out and take all your records with you. They will guide you through everything. Dr. Wood is a world renown cancer specialist there. I have listened and read everything I can about this disease because of my husband, Dave. Please proceed urgently. Joan
