How can I gain weight?

I am currently half-way through my post-operative chemotherapy for rectal cancer - FolFAX 8, or whatever number - I'm on treatment number 5 of 8. In the last two weeks, I have lost four pounds - from 104 to 100. I feel like my appetite is good, it is just that I cannot eat a whole lot of food at a time. I am active, I walk my dogs for 45 minutes twice a day - a necessity, or they go crazy from lack of exercise. I like all kinds of foods - I keep a jar of peanut butter handy for the occasional high-calorie munch a couple of times a day, I drink Ensure Plus or Boost Plus a couple of times a week, and I try to eat five or six smaller meals a day.

If anyone has any good suggestions I'd appreciate them!  I cannot leave off walking my dogs - it does wonders for my mood, prevents depression, and keeps the dogs sane (as well as keeping them convinced that thei Pack Leader is NOT sick, and they obey me well).  I just need some tips on getting fatter!

Thanks,

Consuelo

Can you tell me a little more about agel?  I don't know if I am spelling it right when I try to look it up.

I have tried BeneCalorie, and it locked me up inside (not good for a person with a colostomy).  I also have high cholesterol, so really high-fat foods are something I have to limit.  Ensure Plus keeps me from losing weight further, but I really need to put on some pounds.  Nothing in my closet fits me anymore!

Thanks for any help you can offer.

You might try 3 tblsp flax oil mixed well in 6 tblsp cottage cheese.  Lots of calories and very health.

I would highly recommend that you buy Smoothie King's Gladiator protein powder (strawberry flavor is the best).  2 scoops, banana, milk or yogurt and fruit of choice can equal 1,000 calories and it's absolutely yummy.

My husband has stomach cancer and had his whole stomach removed, but he's been able to enjoy these.  Let me know if they work for you.

Good luck and God bless.

HOME MADE EGG YOLK MAYONASE

Hi,

It’s good you’re still exercising, this is a great help against cancer. Mayonnaise as an emulsified fat enters the blood more readily. It’s the very best thing I’ve found to stop weight lose and give back some energy. Homemade  because you want to avoid all the commercial chemicals.

Use half and half OLIVE OIL and  CANOLA OIL no other oils!

If you add pure vitamin C to a little water you can use this instead of vinegar. The advantage is you can get a lot more vitamin C into you instead of it just passing through as diarrhoea. This form of vitamin C goes straight to the liver and cleanses it. Fantastic. Not only good for cancer patients, but also very helpful for chronic fatigue. This solution also needs salt to take away a metallic, fishy taste.

After I’ve made this into a heavy hard mayonnaise (to get the vitamin C on the “inside” of the oil and not the other way around), I then mix a spoon full (or more) into a glass of water, and mix well. Pretty good!

The Cleveland Clinic's oncology dietician recommended Carnation Breakfast VHC.  It is like Ensure except it has 560 calories in a single 8 oz serving.  I add chocolate powder to the vanilla drink (the only option).  This was often the only food my husband could get down in the 2-3 days immediatlely following chemo.

You will not find this supplement on the shelf at your local drug or grocery store.   Ask the pharmacy to order it for you, ours did not know it existed until I asked for it.  It costs about $24.00/case at Walgreens.
