If you are from NY you should look into Murray Brennan at Sloan Kettering, he has done the most whipple procedures and is one of the best surgeons. He is #2 in the world for the whipple procedure. Howard Bruckner of Mt. Sinai does and aggressive approach to chemo. My father had pancreatic cancer and was being treated at Cancer treatment center of america in Philly and we were informed after he started treatment there that Bruckner did the same chemotherapy. My father's cancer had spread to his liver. I just want you to know that if your mother disease has spread, be very careful on the chemo treatment you choose, we did the most aggressive which was 4 types of chemo, 2 weeks on and 1 week off. We did not get the outcome we wished because of massive side effects that we did not expect. I do hear great things about Dr. Robert Fine of Columbia Presbyterian, he is an oncologist if you would like to try to contact him.

thanks so much for the quick replies.

from the biopsy, there are cells in the lymph nodes too, so the whipple couldn't be done yet. they would have to do chemo and/or radiation first. bruckner would be in charge of that.

they're still not 100% sure about the cells, though. i think there's a small possibility that it's fibrosing pancreatitis. apparently, unless they can confirm that it's the fibrosing pancratitis, then they will treat it as cancer, since it's growing fast.

Visit the PanCan site and you can get a number to call and talk to the people there.  They will probably be able to give you some good info on most doctors.

I also recommend you visit the JHU Chat Board.  http://pathology.jhu.edu/pancreas_chat/

It has  a lot more people on it and you will probably find someone there who will know about those doctors and can give you a lot more inof.

Hi,

My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer December 2006.  Dr. Cooperman and Dr Wayne performed his whipple in about 4 hours, maybe a little less.  I understand that is very quick for a whipple.  I have heard of that operation taking as long as 8-10 hours.  Wayne is an excellent doctor.  I have never met a surgeon that cared so much about his patients, going so far as to give out his cell phone number in case of emergency.  Dr's Cooperman and Wayne now work out of St. Vincent's in NYC as part of the new Pancreatic and Bilary disease group, headed by Dr. Kasmin (a GI doctor).  Cooperman is an expert at the whipple, from what I was told.

Currently my dad is in chemo being treated by Dr Bruckner.  He is an interesting guy.  Genius type. He takes on patients that other places won't.  I have ment many people under Bruckner's care that were told they had no hope from other places.  He is VERY aggressive with his chemo treatment, using as many as 5 chemicals on my dad.  He has had a great deal of success as well.

I know this posting is a little late, but I hope it helps.

Good luck to you.  I will keep a good thought for you mother.

my boyfriend's dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer about a year ago and has been seeing Dr. Bruckner and also had the whipple surgery done by Dr. Wayne and Cooperman. They seem to be very happy with Dr. Bruckner.
