Has anyone had reoccurence of squamous cell carcinoma of the Throat?

My husband was diagnosed three years ago.  He had modified radical neck dissection followed by chemo and radiation.  The cancer returned this past Dec. and he just finished taxotere (chemo) and will go for another modified radical neck dissection this Thurs. or April 11.  Just wanted to know results from anyone who has had modified radical neck dissection on both sides.

My thoughts are with you and your family.  My husband was just recently diagnosed with SCC of the tonsil.  He had surgery 2 weeks ago, but we have not started treatment yet.  Keep your hopes high, and hang in there.

If the recurrence is on the same place (same side) and he had a full shot of radiation the first time then radiation to already damaged tissue is usually not a possible option. Will the new neck dissection be on the same side? It sounds like maybe it is the other side. Your dr will have to give you the estimated odds of cure in his case but I have seen people with bilateral neck dissections that do fine. Depending on how much muscle is removed (or if it involves any nerves) he might have difficulty turning his head (which can impair driving). But take it one step at a time. Be thankful for what each day holds.

KerrySLP,

My husband will be having the modified radical neck dissection on the opposite side.  The first one was on the right side of the neck , this one is to be done on the left side of the neck.  The doctor said that there could be a risk of a stroke, greater than 2% but less than 10% due to extracting the jugular vein.  Would like to know if anyone knows of anyone having the modified radical neck dissection  on both sides and how they did? He will be going for surgery on April 11.  Keep us in your prayers.

Thanks for your reply,
