Thank you for your replies re gagging and coughing.  My husband has now, thankfully, passed the coughing and gagging stage and is now drinking water and has started eating a small amount of soft food. His tube is still his best friend. His problem now is his dry mouth at night, he wakes every hour of so and needs to rinse or spray, are there any tips to help him sleep longer between rinses.

He also finds that after about 5pm his throat tightens up and he finds it very difficult to swallow. Any suggestions please

I hept two cool mist humidifiers going all night long, took one of those backpacks that have water bladders in them with a hose and hung it on the head board. Then all I had to do was reach over in the dark and find the hose, stick it in my mouth and get water. Sometimes I'd fall a sleep with it in my mouth and just bit on it from time to time to get the water.

Good luck, hang in there and God Bless.

Rick

I'm having the same thing. I keep a bottle of water and a spray bottle of Oasis on the nightstand, and I have a humidifier going next to the bed. It helps. See if you can get the doc to prescribe Salagen (pilocarpine) to help stimulate some saliva production.

Biotene products are great for drymouth. Just about any pharmacy and some grocery stores carry them.

I agree with the last suggestion re Biotene (mouth rinse, toothpaste and chewing gum) they are lifesavers for me.  Unfortunately salagen did not work for me but try it anyway.
