My friend is diagnosed rectal cancer. We heard that the Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital in NYC were among the best in north America. Finding a good surgeon is now a huge decision for my friend. Anybody here has any suggestions? Many thanks in advance.

I also had rectal cancer 2 years ago. I had a wonderful surgeon, his name is Dr. David Shibata, he is at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa FL, I would highly reccomend him to anyone.

I would think you would like to look at national registries of colo-rectal surgeons in your region.  I would also say that the person that I think is the best is Dr. Kirk Ludwig -- he is now at the University of Wisconsin.  If your insurance allows you to go there -- I would contact him in a heartbeat.   Best, stjohn

I would reccommend Dr. joel Goldberg, a colo rectal oncologic surgeon at The Brigham and Womens hospital, which is connected to The Dana Farber Cancer Center in Boston, MA

I was diagnosed with Rectal Cancer April 2007, I went to Sloan Kettering, my surgeon was Dr. Phillip Paty. He was awesome, he was able to spare me a colostomy when all other doctors said I had no other option.

Your message is from 3 months ago, so I hope your friend has no further need of surgeon recommendations, but for anyone else reading this thread, I had a fist-sized stage III rectal tumor, quite low in my rectum, in September 2005. In January 2006, after chemo and radiation to shrink the tumor, I had laparoscopic (with hand-assist) surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Weston, Florida. My surgeon pioneered this particular surgery, and I was saved from a permanent colostomy by his expertise. His name is Dr. Steve Wexner.
