Hi. My oncologist gynecologist said that I will be needing laser surgery for my vin 3. He's going to laser out the dysplasia and then sitch the other parts back together. I've never had this kind of sugery before and am a bit scared. I was wondering if anyone has gone through it and what kind of pain and or how much recovery time I will need. My immune system is low due to an organ transplant and so I'm guessing that even with this treatment, the dysplasia will end up coming back again.

 Thank you.

Hi There!

I myself have had two laser surgeries for VIN and will probably need a third one in the next couple of months.  My oncologist told me from the beginning that I would probably need more than one surgery to clear it.  My first surgery was June of last year and at that time they also did an excision.  The area that was lasered was VIN 3 and the excision was VIN 1.  When I went back in October I was at VIN 2 in the same area I had lasering done and now we are just waiting to see what things are looking like when I go back in May for my follow up.

If they are stitching you, you should expect 4 - 8 weeks to heal and the lasering usually heals in about a week depending on how quickly your body heals itself.  The one thing I have been told by many doctors is that even though you look healed from the lasering, it takes 3 to 4 months for that tissue to completely heal.  The lasering is not that bad.  I was actually awake during my second laser surgery and was out of the office five minutes later.

The best thing you can do is to take as many sits baths as you can.  It helps the healing process and also helps to keep the area clean and cuts down the chance of infection.  It is very important to take those baths.  Just make sure to keep as dry as possible down there.  I have a high tolerance for pain so for me the pain was not too bad but I did have alot of relief from the pain while I was sitting in a luke warm bath.

This is just my experience.  I hope this helps.  :)  If you would like to talk you can send a private message and I will be more than happy to help you through this.  This board was a life saver for me when I was first diagnosed last year.  :)

I wish you the best and please feel free to contact me if you need to talk.

Chris

I was diagnosed with VIN III in 11/07.  Scared beyond words never heard of it before and neither has anyone else in my circle of life.  I found this site searching the web for anwsers and visit here almost daily.  It is a connection to others that are facing the same problem and a reminder of how lucky I am that it was caught before it turmed into something much worse.   I had no idea that this type of thing happened to people who did not live a risky life style.  I had an excision to remove it.  It did take a few days to heal.  I currently see the gyn oncologist every three months.  The last visit showed two questionable spots and I opted to wait until the next visit to do biopsies.  I wish that there was more information of the cause of this problem.  The big thing is keep all your doctors visits, this is a serious condition that must be monitored.
