Subject: Sutent & Fatigue after eating

Hello. My dad is on his 3rd round of sutent (@ 37.5 mg). I have noticed that after eating he gets really tired. As if the process of eating itself is making him tired. I notice this more after he takes his sutent but sometimes, I notice this at other times as well. Has anyone taking sutent experienced this?

I know sutent causes severe fatigue but this correlation to eating doesn't make sense.

Any comments/advise would be great.

 Thanks!

Hi!     I am also on Sutent, 3rd round @50 mg. You're right fatigue is a side effect, but how does your Dad feel otherwise? Does eating bring on the fatigue or is it you happen to notice it.Either way I would discuss this with his DR.Hope things get better,How's the Sutent doing otherwise?  Take Care    John

John,

I have noticed that sutent in general is causing fatigue for my dad. But, it also seems to be causing him to get really tired directly after eating. I spoke to one of my friends who is an oncologist.. he mentioned that we all get tired after eating and that this feeling gets exaggerated sometimes by targeted drug therapies (like sutent) and some chemo therapies. His suggested solution was to take short naps. Otherwise, sutent seems to be working ok. How is it going for you?

Hello all,

I take my Sutent at night before bed. So I don't really notice fatigue after taking the medicine. Have you read anything that says to take in the morning? I do have a lot of other side effects from the medicine like no appetite, taste buds get irritated quickly, can't eat anything spicy or red sauce,my skin turns bright yellow, my hair is turning all white all over my body, my skin gets really irritated from everything (even as simple as the stearing wheel) extra tired during the day, restless at night, sometimes anxiety. I think I could probably think of a couple more, but the bottom line is the pill is working. I have been on Sutent for about 8-9 months now and originally the tumor shrunk a lot! the second test showed it was stable and non progressing, i go for another ct scan in about a week and I pray that it is shrinking more or stable.

good luck to all of you.

Pam

Hi!  I have been on sutent for about a year and yes the fatigue you feel while on the drug is really bad.  Sometimes I feel very cold and clammy and faint and I have to sit down when I don't eat but there have been times after eating I got really tired.  The side effects of this drug are many. And difficult.  Like the other person who wrote it is best to take it before bed.  I take my Imodium and my tigan and prevacid at that time too so I don';t wake up early with having to go to the bathroom.  I avoid hot and spicy foods.  Using biotene toothpaste and mouthwash is a great relief for dry sore mouth.  The side effects can make you miserable but I am stable and my tumors have shrunk.  Sometimes I can't do the entire 28 days but I take them as long as I can stand it and I usually get through it.  Blessings to you!

I have been on Sutent for 18 months.  I am glad to hear how some have taken the drug and night and have found it to be more tolerable.  I will check with my MD's to see if this is something I should be trying.  I used to be on the 28 day schedule then two weeks off.  Now I take the drug for 14 days and have 7 off.  While it is not the answer, it is a bit better and would recommend you talk with your docs about it also.  I find that fatigue is something I can fight through, and if I keep busy, like walking, biking, working outside, I don't notice the fatigue.  I have been on all levels of Sutent and currently am on 37.5....the 50 dose was too brutal, sores all over.....the 25 per day was too little and we notice incremental growth.  At 37.5 I seem to have stable scans....anyway, keep in there guys!

My husband has been on sutent for 12 months.  Recently, we questioned our oncologist because Joe was extremely tired.  He did an extra blood work-up in the office, and found out that Joe's thyroid is underactive, which our doctor said could definately be a side effect from taking sutent.  He put him on thyroid medicine, and Joe immediately started to feel a lot more energetic.  I don't know if this could be what is happenning with your dad, but it might be worth looking into.  Also to everyone who has responded to this email, hang in there with all of your side effects, and everything else you are experiencing.  After a little over a year of finding that Joe's cancer had returned from his kidney to his lung lining, our last CT scan showed that from where Joe was last February, level 4 renal cell carcinoma, his lungs and lung lining are clear of all fluid, his nodules (which were many) are gone, and our doctor said we are now treating cancer in Joe that is Microscopic!!  Next to the healing power of God, we can say that Sutent is nothing short of a miracle in our lives.  We hope and pray that the same results are in all of your futures.  Blessings, Joanie

Hello, I have been on Sutent for the past few months. The first CT scan was great as it showed a 50% reduction in the tumor. However the side effects were bad. Especially the sores on the tongue. Since we reduced the amount to 37.5 most of the side effects are tolerable but near the end of the cycle my tongue gets a bit sore. The worst thing that I have noticed is a cough that persists and is really rough on my throat and whole body. Has anyone else had a cough as a big problem.   John
