Hello, I am the san diego musician who will have the whipple for my neuroendocrine tumor in ten days at UCSD thornton hospital. I have lost 30 pounds by eliminating sugar, starches, coffee, sodas, red meat and dairy from my diet. I am juicing regularly and riding my bike daily and am doing great! I feel strong as an ox and I know I will beat this cancer. I am still scared to have surgery but I know I will prevail. I read an excellent book called "Beating cancer with nutrition" bu Patrick Quillen. Its a great book and has really helped me. I toyed with the idea of doing natural cures for my neuroendocrine tumor but since Billionaire Apple computer founder Steve Jobs was not able to cure his neuroendocrine tumor the natural way, I figure a lowly musician like me on a budget, has no chance. anyway, just wanted to thank all of you who wrote to me here. Your support and kindness means so much. much love to you all ...we are all members of this exclusive cancer club that none of us wanted to joing! xo candye

I had a Whipple on 8/30/07. I am 47 years old and otherwise in good health. I was out of the hospital in 8 days and recovered at home for the next 6 weeks. I had a lot of pain but the painkillers were worse for me as I did not like the head-spinning feelings they gave me so I did not take them very often...mostly before bedtime but not every night.

My surgeon and oncologist recommended the regimen from Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle (combo of chemotherapy and radiation simultaneously). It was not pleasant. Lots of fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea.

I was back at work the week of Thanksgiving (I probably pushed the return to work but getting back to a normal routine seemed to help me with the healing process....especially the mental part.

You can get through it with the right attitude and support. I wish byou the best.

I am now through with the treatments and

I had a Whipple on 4/13/05 followed by 5-FU/radiation and 4 cycles of gemzar...CA19-9 is now in normal range and all scans are clean.

It'll take a while to adjust to new norms post-whipple but if I can do it anyone can!

Sending prayers your way.

Hi Candye,

I know you can't be checking this site right now, but when you do get well enough to check in I wanted to let you know I have been thinking about you and hoping the very best for you.

Hope to learn soon how things are going for you.

Candye,

I'm also a very recent Whipple patient (is there an actual slang for this... Whipplee, perhaps?)...  Being only 3 wks from under the knife, I really dont have any advice that can be even remotely useful, except to keep you chin up and try to put a positive face on each day, no matter how lousy the day may seem, it is, after all, another day you get to have...
