Subject: stage 4 RCC/Toresil and Avastin
Date: 04/08/2008

Hi,

My 62 year old dad was diagnosed with RCC the day before Thanksgiving '07.  He had a right radical nephrectomy and was also found to have metastasis to both lungs.  Every CT he has had since then shows that the tumors are growing.  He has just completed his first round of Sutent (50mg) and had another CT yesterday that showed that not only have his tumors grown, but there are more appearing.  He has been given the option of enrolling in a clinical trial using both Toresil and Avastin.  Is there anyone out there that can tell me about their experiences on these drugs and if they are working?  I want to be positive and feel like there is hope but I felt so good about the Sutent and I feel so crushed after his appt. yesterday.  Has anyone been unsuccessful with Sutent but had a good response to either Toresil or Avastin.  Also, I do realize Avastin is only now approved for colon cancer but I thought there might be someone out there on this same clinical trial.

Thanks and God bless,

Tina

Dear Christina,

Avastin has been approved for use on RCC. I also have Stage 4 RCC and am presently taking Avastin by itself. I had initially taken Sutent for 72 weeks until it stopped working the beginning of this year. The tumors I have started growing  again and had actually doubled in size in two months. I took my second dose of Avastin on the 2nd of the month but have not had any followup Cat Scans yet. My prayers go out to you and your father. You can read about those of us taking both drugs on this site. I havent experienced any side effects on Avastin other than a bad head ache over a few days during the first dose.

My Oncologist told me that he rated Sutent first and Avastin second and the most successful out of the approved treatments available.

Good Luck!

Terry
