Subject: Thyrogen side effects questions
Date: 04/09/2008

I had TT in April '07 &  RAI June '07.  "Hypo Hell" was certainly true for me in terms of nausea.  About the 10 days before and at least a week after RAI, I pretty much felt like I had 24 hour morning sickness.  I'm now getting ready for my 1 year followup scan and will be doing that with Thyrogen rather than going hypo!  Yippee!  But I've also been reading the Thyrogen list of side effects---nausea, headache, etc. are listed and I'm wondering if anyone in this group has any info for me.  Is this just a standard disclaimer, or is it pretty common?  I have a really sensitive stomach to begin with and the LID over the past 2 weeks has already set it off to a certain degree. At this point I'm just trying to plan out my next week.....how much chamomille tea and seven-up am I going to need?  SUE

I haven't had the Thyrogen shots yet I just had my 6 month ultrasound and will get rsults on Monday but I am planning on doing the shots for my 1 year scan in August.  One of my friends just had it done in November and she said she had no side effects at all from the shots!  I was really sick when I went Hypo and after the RAI I don't think I ate for 4 days!  I am optimistic that the shots will be so much better.  I hope that is the case for you!  I will keep positive thoughts for you!

Welcome, fellow LID sufferer!  It seems we're along the same road right now.

This is my second set of Thyrogen injections (my last was in August, 2007), and I'm having a PET scan, CT scan, and WBS this time around.  I have an elevated thyroglobulin level and some lymph node swelling they want to check out.  Anyway, my first shot is next Tuesday.

I don't believe I had much in the way of side effects with my first set of injections last August, certainly not with the first shot.  The second shot did make me feel a little "off" - tired, vaguely nauseous, slight headache.

I'll let you know how it goes this time around, though you will probably be at the same point I am.

Doesn't the LID suck?  I heard a cardinal singing in the tree this morning and I swear I heard, "Cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger...chips, chips, chips!"  My daughter asked, "Mom, how hungry ARE you?"

Hi Sue,

I had a TT April 16,2007, RAI June 07 w/ "Hypo Hell" as well. I had my follow up scan last month using Thyrogen and I had NO side effects at all. I did stop taking my Synthroid during the week of Thyrogen treatment. The only concern that I have is reading at the Thryrogen website that your results my not be accurate using Thyrogen vs. going hypo. If you are like me the peace of mind is worth the hypo. Next time I think I will go hypo. and alternate each year. Good Luck with your decision!

Thanks to all for your responses.....although I know Thyrogen shots have got to be way better than going hypo, I'm really not too excited about spending another "seasick" week.  My doc told me she was letting me use thyrogen for the testing only because my labs were fine....if their values had raised any concern, she would have had me go hypo rather than use Thyrogen.

PS  It was comforting  to hear I wasn't the only one finding the entire process to be the best "weight loss" plan ever!   :O)    I lost almost 15lbs last spring during LID and hypo hell and most of it is still off!!!!!!  Now, after being on LID for almost 2 weeks, I'm down some more!  I could really stand to lose another 20lbs and although I suspect Jenny Craig would be cheaper than this "plan", I'll take what I can get!  (I know I'm stretching, but this is one positive thing about it all.)     SUE

I had absolutely no side effects from Thyrogen shots last year (before my RAI 131).  I'll be doing the shots again soon for the one year scan.  My doctor came to us from Sloan-Kettering (I'm in Omaha), and he said that's all they use now.  So, no need to go hypo ever!!  I've never been and never will.  You will love doing the shots - it's a breeze!

I just had my first thyrogen shot of this round this morning. I'm nauseated , achey/headachey, and a little feverish. But I have more of a reaction than most people.

This is my second round of thyrogen (last one was five years ago, also for a follow-up scan). After the first time going hypo, a week of flu seems like a bargain!

I'm not sure what LID is, though--sorry if this is a FAQ; I found this site looking for info on thyrogen side effects, and haven't found a glossary or anything.

LID is low iodine diet; if you are taking your Thyrogen injections you should also be on a low iodine diet.
